Question for those that have run marathons before?

while running the marathon, i have heard it is recommended to consume while running. is this true? eat or drink what? how often?

i run 15-16 miles without consuming anything. is this bad? i feel my calf muscles trying to cramp up while running at the end, if i try drinking water, its going to make my stomach hurt which is why i haven t done it. but I ve heard i should do it.

what do you consume? how often? im training for a marathon and need and could use all the help advice i could get thanks.
