Eat something like an hour beforehand. Preferably a clean carbohydrate such as oatmeal. If you're doing cardio, you can cramp up a bit if you eat too close to your workout.
Yeah you always want to eat a hour or so before working out as food is energy.
You want to eat carbs and protein.
bananas are a good source of Potassium. That avoids cramps. And they contain energy too.

A turkey sandwich with carrots and an apple. How about some water to was it all down? X)
Eat some egg whites just to take the edge off a little bit
