What kind of condition is this?

A guy I know has some sort of mental illness. It's obvious to everyone. When he talks, he just stops and his whole body freezes for a second or two. He doesn't even blink. Then he continues as if nothing happened. It's like pausing a tape. No one interrupts him, though. He can't talk for more than a minute without freezing up. Sometimes it happens after every word and sometimes he can get out whole sentences. Any idea as to what this may be? I'm too scared to ask him, because I don't know him very well.

It sounds like he's "just" suffering from stuttering. With the freezing of the whole body and no blinking it sounds like a severe case.
This is taken from wikipedia: "As well as involuntary silent pauses or blocks in which the person who stutters is unable to produce sounds" and "Blocks and prolongations are learned mechanisms to mask repetition, as the fear of repetitive speaking in public is often the main cause of psychological unease." It really seems to me that this is his "condition"

I have no idea but that's really strange. I have a 2 second mental delay it's not quite like that though, nothing freezes up, it just takes 2 seconds for my brain to process information.
