Tonsillectomy tips?

Anonymous
My 13 year old cousin is getting her tonsils removed tomorrow morning, and she is very nervous. She has very bad breath and her doctor found out it was because of tonsiloths (tonsil stones) which are basically calcified pieces of food that got stuck in her tonsils that smell horrible.

I have no idea how to console her. She also has a huge fear of needles and I know she will freak out
when she gets her IV. She has a low pain tolerance and I'm scared she is going to refuse to drink/eat and will have to be hospitalized again.

How bad will the pain be for a 13 year old? How often/how much water should she drink? What can she eat? I heard ice cream should be avoided. Is that true? What is the surgery like (what goes on at the hospital?) What can she do to ease her pain post-surgery?

Please also give additional tips and advice so she can survive this surgery! She's never had surgery before (I'm also not sure how she will react to the anesthesia...) Thanks.
