Apparently I am intimidating...What do I do?

I have liked this guy for a year now. I only get to see him twice a week or so and when I do he always smiles and yells my full name at me. When we play sports he always goes on and on when I do something really well. Sometimes around me he is really open and others it's like he's afraid to acknowledge me.

On to the problem...

Question 1: Are these signs he is interested? Or am I just seeing what I want to see?

Question 2: I keep wanting him to ask me to hang out some time or something but my friends all tell me that I really intimidate guys. So I'm afraid that even if he is interested in me he will never try to push further for fear of rejection. What should I do?

Well I've been literally told off a few times for being too intimidating. Generally people associate the word intimidating with unapproachable. The easiest way to appear more approachable is to smile and make eye contact more often. Also don't look too serious in this guy's presence. Laugh, be chatty and friendly. If you get close enough I suggest that you tell him that you've liked him for a year! Surely he would realize that you are not as intimidating as they say, if you kept quiet about your crush for a whole year. You could even admit you were unsure as to whether he actually liked you or not, then you will not come across as stuck-up or too impossible to get. Not that you are those things, but that's people for you, making assumptions as always. The boasting about your sports seems really cute, I think he's proud of you aaww!

need to be nicer to him and just go up and ask him straight up "do you want to hang out (insert whatever here?" I assume since you said you're intimidating, you must be confidant so just go up to himand try to be friends first.
