I've always heard that it doesn't necessarily matter how much you eat as long as you are eating the right foods. If you eat a lot of fruits and veggies you can really eat as much of them as you want.
Another good rule of thumb is eat until you aren't hungry.
Keep your metabolism going by eating a small healthy snack (like a handful of carrots or a vegetable/fruit of your liking) every few hours.
Eat smaller meals but more of them.
Those are things my doctor told me.

Cups of food isn't the measurement used to determine a person's Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). There are very general calculators that will give you a number of calories to meet your TDEE. These calculators/formulas attempt to account for age/gender/lifestyle/exercise habits.
The basic prevailing rule is just eat until you're not hungry.
Eating until you're full is overeating.
