It partly depends on where you are. It shouldn't cost anywhere near that much. Yea, it's expensive, but shop around and try to find a better price. You should be able to get all four pulled for less than half that much, maybe even a quarter of that price. Also find a dentist who will pull them. A lot of dentists have started sending people to specialists when they can do it themselves.
And no, there is really no good reason to automatically pull your wisdom teeth. They should be treated like any other teeth - only pull them if there is a good reason. It's true that they are less important than other teeth, and you can get by without them, but that doesn't mean to automatically pull them. It also takes more effort to brush and keep them clean, but it you take care of them they should last as long as any other tooth.

They tell just about EVERYONE they need it. It's like when all our parents had their tonsils out for virtually no reason whatsoever. They're telling people in their teens they'll need to have their wisdom teeth out even before they're in.
I was told I would have to have all four of mine out a long time ago. They were all coming in a little crooked, after all. But it turned out fine; many years later, I still have them all and only one will have to be pulled. And that's really only because it got a cavity in it and the dentist won't fix it because he says it "has to be pulled anyway."
Because thats our medical field for you. Everything is just a scram and a ploy for them to make more money.
You pay per tooth lol and it's expensive because of the anesthetic

You're paying a surgeon not to permanently screw up any tissue, and extract something from you in a cleanly manner. Not just anyone can do the operation. The anesthesia, if not done correctly, can kill you. You're paying for all their hard work and training. If they make any mistakes, guess who's getting sued?
I went to my dentist to get an estimate and he quoted me $500 with no insurance and I would have to schedule an appointment to come back and get it removed. I then went to an oral surgeon to get a estimate for removing the wisdom tooth and he said $125 with no insurance and she could do it as soon as pay to have it removed. 30min later wisdom tooth was gone.
