+1 yi don´t do deadlifts. i use other means of trainig those muscles, using mashines and differend exercises, cause deadlifts are just a fitness fad, that is really bad for the back... i know it´s about accurate execution to prevent injury but everybody who´s been to the gym some time, knows that you do sometimes are a little sloppy and a back us ruined pretty quickly. why would i risk that when there are alternatives?

Deadlifts are actually one of the most important exercises to do. They are only bad for the back if you have poor form when performing the exercise.
- +1 y
@thorthorley why are they so important? yeah sorry i fucked up the sentence but i stated that it´s about good form but there are other things i can do that don´t rely on form so why would i risk back injury because i just one rep don´t focus and mess up the form?
- +1 y
Deadlift is a whole body exercise which works more than just the lower back. It tenses a lot of muscles and is a compound exercise rather than working an isolated muscle. The three main exercises that are recommended by Arnold Schwarzenegger and his role model Reg Park are the deadlift, squat and bench press since these are whole body exercises.
- +1 y
@thorthorley so where is abs, biceps and lat in those 3 ? those are probably just the 3 that he reccomends for the casual fitness guys or he just likes doing them, cause a professional will do a complicated split schedule where a "whole body" workout like deadlifts would ruin the schedule.
deadlift is not "important" it´s just a multi purpose exercise and i don´t do those anyway in addition to the danger of back injury. - +1 y
deadlifts are good if you have good techniques. it's great for your back. trust me. i have back problems from track and football, but it helped strengthen my back a lot.
- +1 y
cdn-media-2.lifehack.org/.../hyperextensions.jpg this is a danger free lower back exercise and by the way "whole body workout" yeah but the muscles you use in deadlifts will be focussed on in other exercises and won´t be exhausted there anyways so the "whole body" argument is kind of incorrect.
- +1 y
@Other_Tommy_Wiseau no i disagree. yes you should train your lower back if you´re having problems. but especially because of said problems you should do an exercise that´s less likely to hurt you even more. i know deadlift sounds cool and everybody knows it but it´s actually sub optimal for what you´re trying to do.
- +1 y
you tense abs when doing squats, biceps and lats are tensed during deadlifts. Of course there are better exercises to focus on these muscles and you should do these also. But working muscles in unison is a much better exercise than working solely in isolation. This is because there are more muscles than just the main muscle groups. For example, the tricep is made up three different muscles, but not every tricep exercise will target all three muscles. This is the same for all the muscle groups. So for example, a crunch will mainly target the upper abs while a leg flag or dragon flag will mainly target the lower abs. You might think that doing a back extension works the same muscles as a deadlift since they both target the lower back, but they actually work the muscles in different ways and also target other different muscles.
- +1 y
no, that was our most important lift. like you can disagree all you want, but you're wrong. yeah, you can hurt yourself if you do it wrong. you can tear your hamstring if you squat wrong. if you do it right, you won't have any problems and help your back.
- +1 y
@thorthorley "tensed" but not properly worked out... plus they are weary when you´re going to properly work them out. this plus injury risk is my reason why it´s bad. it´s my opinion, not the ultimate truth... but with all the dumb bro science in the fittness industry, nothing is "ultimative true" anyway.
- +1 y
@Other_Tommy_Wiseau i´m not wrong. lifting in thatway is the worst possible for your back. the picture i´ve postet before is arguably the best. if your back is too strong, you can take weights there too.
but keep listening to all the bro science in the gym :D - +1 y
it's good because you have range of motion on your back and mobility. however, it doesn't strengthen it beyond the maximum weight allowed. meaning that you can't add weight. deadlifts allow you to do that. that's like saying benching is not better than push ups. i don't bench personally because i broke my already paper thin wrists, but you can add significantly more weight compared to you only pressing the weight that you already weigh. let's stop playing stupid, dude.
- +1 y
@Other_Tommy_Wiseau "it doesn´t strengthen it beyond the maximum weight allowed" ? how is there a maximum weight? you just take some barbels or plates in front of your chest. there is no "maximim allowed" in that exercise... dude good idea to stop playing stupid...
also you can´t hurt your back even with the additional weight, cause of the angle of lift. you´re not squeezing down on your intervertebral discs like in deadlifts.
deadlifts are just a disc prolapse waiting to happen. my exercise is not. - +1 y
spinal disc herniation? i don´t know the proper term for it. it´s a second language. i hope you know what i mean.
- +1 y
the maximum weight is your weight x gravity. physics, nigga, physics. ok, you can put a 45 on your chest, but you still can't hold 3 or 4 plates and lift your back. it works a different group of muscles. they aren't the same motions. it works your abs more than your back so yes, you can tear an ab muscle due to the sheer strain. just like you can tear your quad or hurt your back when you dead lift. and you can definitely hurt yourself deadlifting. i never said you can't, but if you aren't stupid and know what you can and can't lift, you won't have problems and is a good workout.
do you even lift? - +1 y
if i weight 170 and i usually deadlift 285, i'm not gonna try and lift 400lbs. people know their limits, generally.
- +1 y
and if it's such a bad lifting exercise, why the hell do pro athletes across almost every sport do it?
- +1 y
@Other_Tommy_Wiseau DUUUDE really get your shit together. due to the angle there is less weight on your back muscle then on your spinal disc compared to deadlifts.
also "physics, nigga" leverage forces. ever heard of it? because of the angle you need to carry way less waight in your hands in order to use your lower back muscle to full capacity.
if you want to increase difficulty, go ahead and just hold the waight straight foreward in front of your head while doing the exercise. i guarantee you, you won´t lift 30 pounds this way... yes i do lift and yes i do certainly lift more than you but since you´re being all stupid, calling me n** and shit i won´t even lower myself to discuss with you any further. i´ve wasted too much time explainging things to a dude with a brick in place of a brain. good luck with your back... - +1 y
oh yeah because people are dumb and do what everybody else does. just to compare and impress each other. that´s why. hard, sad truth.

Dead lift max 3 plates each side and a dime. Lemme get out my calculator. Okay so I can dead lift 290 lbs. Do I feel like an alpha? Bet I do. JK I could honestly care less how much a person lifts as long as you are working your body. Best thing to do is just work your way up slowly but surely.

Asker+1 yThat's really impressive though
Asker+1 yHaha very true
Anonymous(36-45)+1 yMy heaviest deadlift so far is 135 lbs. I'm working on lifting heavier... slowly but surely. Safety first.

Asker+1 yThat sounds good, I've never tried deadlifting but I'd like to try
Opinion Owner+1 yThank you! The key is to take it slowly and focus on form. Form is what will keep you safe and will allow you to get the most benefit from the deadlift. You don't want to start out right away at a heavy weight; you'll only injure yourself, which will take some time out of you being able to progress in your deadlift. If your gym has a complementary free personal training session, I suggest you take advantage of that and ask the personal trainer to teach you proper deadlift form and determine a starting deadlift weight for you. If not, try watching some reputable videos/tutorials on how to to proper deadlifts. :)
Asker+1 yThanks for the advice!
Asker+1 yI appreciate it!!

Asker+1 yI'd be proud if I could do that

well, yeah. you're a girl!! if you jumped 17 feet or ran a quarter mile in a minute, that would be good. if i jump 17 feet and run a quarter mile in a minute, it'd be considered below average :D
Asker+1 yWell...
+1 yI never tried to max but I deadlift 10 reps / 50kg (which is 110 bls I believe).

Asker+1 ySounds pretty good to me
Not sure. What is your fastest mile time?

Asker+1 yWell... I suck at running... The only time I tried running a mile was in high school, and no joke, my time was like 14 minutes, I walked like 70% of it
+1 y405 pound deadlift.

@Girly1710 Yup
Asker+1 yVery impressive
- +1 y
@Girly1710 Meh, guess you don't spend much time with fit guys.
That's actually a pretty standard max deadlift for fit guys. - +1 y
Asker - thanks
- +1 y
@Girly1710 You probably should look it up. It's not a very intensive movement actually, therefore someone with good muscularity can put up a lot of weight. Now bench pressing 405 is another story haha, I can't bench near that much.
Deadlifts really exert tons of energy, it's great to recomposition one's body, you are dead after them, lol the name is very fitting.
