Why are parents so intent on stopping their son/daughter fro committing suicide when they're in pain from something like depression?

When my Grandma was sick and wanted to die I was sad but unlike parents who send their suicidal teens to mental hospitals I'm not selfish and wouldn't want someone to live in pain for my sake so I understood when they decided to pull the plug. So I don't get why when parents see their child suffering that can't learn to let go and allow them the dignity of death instead of being locked up and treated like a rabbid dog?

Pulling the plug on a terminally ill patient is not the same as letting a depressed person kill themselves.
One, unfortunately, is untreatable and you would be prolonging their pain for no reason. It's hard, but sometimes you have to let go to help them. The other, although they feel it's the worst, can be overcome. I used to be suicidal and my sisters did find out. They tried to help me as best they could. I'm better now, but back then I felt it was my only option. It's not. Depression is treatable.
Personally, I'm for euthanasia and suicide as long as all other resources are exhausted first. Pretty much for absolute last resort.

And no parent want to outlive their children. None. Sure it's sad your parent dies before you, but it happens.

Helping and forcing are two separate things. I was depressed and my parent sent me to a mental hospital for depression and I disowned them for it.

If what's causing the pain is treatable it doesn't make sense not to try. For ex depression is very treatable. Hard time will pass and things will get better. Just because the patient can't see it doesn't mean he won't be happy to be alive when it passes.

They need a lot of support until then.

That's not them talking. It's the depression due to being sick. They won't be the same once it passes.

Problem: illnesses can't talk. There's nothing wrong with trying to convince them but I having them locked up is something else entirely.

If someone saw a kid trying to cross a highway he will stop him. He won't try to convince him not to cross. When someone wants to die their judgment is clouded similar to a young kid.
No one trys to kill himself out of happiness but out of desperation of a better life.

I have been suicidal in the past but I got out of it by my own strength and I know that having depression doesn't cloud your judgement; it's not a form a psychosis. My parents sent me to a hospital for depression and it was awful and I disowned them for it.

Not everyone is as brave as you. You made it through but many can't on their own. I'm sorry you went through a lot.
Maybe you were not as severly depressed as many people I saw. Everyone is different. I believe your parents felt that they couldn't do it on their own. I'm sure leaving their child to live away from them was heartbreaking to them as well as you.
I hope one day you can forgive them for doing what they saw as the best for you.

I seriously doubt it was heartbreaking for them and it only made my depression worse and it left me with PTSD on top of the depression. I hope they're proud of themselves.

You really went through hell and back. I know you can't believe it now but I'm sure their intension were good.
Maybe they mistaked at how much you needed them around you. You are hurt beyond words. What was their reaction when you disowned them?

My mom weeped and my dad didn't say anything. by the way their intention ma have bee good but I hold to the conviction that good intentions not followed by good deeds don't mean squat.

I expected their reactions. I know they did many good things to you over the years before what happened. One mistake is all what it took you to disown them. I wish one day you can give them another chance and reconcile with them. Stay strong.

Me being afraid to see treatment is a big part of why I became suicidal.

I have stayed strong and went from a C student in special ed to a straight A student in a teir 1 PhD program. But that "one mistake" almost costed me my life (I was afraid to seek psychiatric help with my depression because of what happened so I became suicidal and a few times i even prepared the means). I did start seeing a psychiatrist though and he said that the long periods of depression and stress untreated resulted in major depressive disorder which I'll probably have for the rest of my life.

because they want their lineage to move on. if everyone would let their children commit suicide would that be good for the species? they love their children they dont want them to die.

Because it's a personal choice and that you think people should be forcibly stopped from committing suicide is "messed up".
