While it's not necessarily healthy to be overweight, I believe that people shouldn't have to lose weight just because of bullies. If they WANT to lose weight let them do it on their own time! Simply put I believe people should be proud of who they are and if they feel like they HAVE to lose weight cos of health and not cos of stupid people then let them do it. Frankly I think it's how an individual looks at the body positivity movement to decide whether it's an excuse or whether it's beneficial. Some people should just look at the whole picture ya know what I mean?
No its not an excuse to be fat but to show that beauty is more than one perception n kinda hypocritical of celebs to celebrate being curvy when most sleep in the gym. N if u want reality of being curvy and embraced for it come to Africa most of everyone is a replica of a beyonce body shape but more proportioned n a little thicker like 2005 beyonce but since plastic surgery is like almost non existent over here. But I do think it gives lazy people an excuse to be lazier n not be soo aware or cautious with their bodies health wise.
I don't see them using it to promote people with burn scars, lost limbs, or scoliosis. So yeah, it's just to make fat women fell better about themselves and overlook their alarmingly declining health.
I have scoliosis, as in visibly, and I think that the body positivity movement has done a lot for me. Have you seen the models for aerie? A lot of them have visible medical conditions. So I’m going to have to disagree with you there.
I think there could be a point to be made that some people use it to ignore health risks of certain lifestyles, but I certainly wouldn’t say that’s all it does. I wouldn’t even say that that’s the majority.
By body positivity I understand accepting different body types. Some women have a hourglass shape, some rectangle, etc. It can go the otger way aroung withbeing underweight. You can be as skinny as you want, but don't try to make it a norm. I have seen very skinny people calling normal people fat just as some overweight people call normal people too skinny.

I have mixed feelings about the body positivity movement. I think its purpose should be to remind people that the way their body looks does not determine their value as a person. However, I do not agree with the statement that every body is beautiful, especially if that is encouraging someone who is at an unhealthy weight to stay at an unhealthy weight or even make it more extreme (whether that weight is too low or too high). Saying every body type or every person is physically beautiful is just a lie. Yes every person has value and life is beautiful in its complexity but we have evolved to only find certain things attractive and that’s that.

So on second thought I guess what I’m saying is that a “personal value” movement would be much better. Society places way too much importance on physical appearance, to the point that people forget that there are much more important characteristics for a person to have.
Everyone who is slightly overweight knows it and gets told it all the time by everyone. It’s like everyone seems to think they’re the only person to have told them... it hurts. Body posistivity is realizing that while you are working on your health aspects, you’re still beautiful. I don’t personally believe I’m beautiful... but I can tell you the shame I’ve had my whole freaking life for being a bit chubby really hurt me... I officially hate myself. Maybe if someone besides my mother had been a bit more positive I wouldn’t hate myself. It’s hard to lose weight for some of us. I hate that I know I’ll never be pretty even if I lose weight. I hate that I still hear taunts from kids and adults in my life for being chubby—not obese, just chubby—ringing in my mind every time I exercise or consider having a piece of Halloween candy like my skinny sisters.
No it is not about saying it is okay it is about motivating them to loose weight and tell them that they are beautiful. For example I'm underweight and I won't do better if you tell me I'm ugly and I shouldn't be seen in society. But I Think we should have People who are healthy weight that models and all heights. Not underweight or overweight (mostly but sometimes) because it can send the wrong message.
Sponge I don't fully agree. Why would you want those considered less good looking to model? That's like saying you want less skilled hockey players on an NHL team to better represent the average person.
Opinion owner, there is nothing wrong with being a little "chubby." Aslong as you have a good personality you will probably find someone who likes you. The way I see it is those who are super attractive have to deal with lots of garbage people to find the one, but since less may be interested in you, you don't have to sift through them. Those people making fun of you are idiots. Even if you don't find someone attractive it doesn't mean you should make fun of them for it.
@nathanp97 i never Said they were less Good looking I Said that it is because they should know they are beautiful no matter what weight or height. Having overweight and underweight models is great when showing that they are beautiful but nobody should strive to become overweight
And they aren't less Good looking and it's actually discriminating woman to Only show tall skinny underweight girls because a short model could model really good but they won't just let you because it isn't sean as a Good thing in the modeling world. But playing hockey you just have to be Good at it.
And the best models are the best looking models, who are the tall and skinny ones often with big breasts. Male models are all tall and muscular and you don't see men complain about that. People just need to grow thicker skin. I'm not great look, yet you won't see me complain when I see good looking people on TV.
Also are you aware that some models and women intentionally try to gain lots of weight, and that fat models who start to loose weight are actually shamed?
@nathanp97 do you reslize that pretty much all models look the same and has to be tall. I can change my weight but I can't change my height and I as a short person should have the same privlige as a tall woman in the business some people even think shorter is better looking and some don't. But the point is to show that every bodytype and heigjt is beautiful. It is discriminating for short people to not get the same chance by fact. And yes some models are trying to get curvy which is really great but most are still underweight on live catwalk. Like Victorias secret
I'm referring to obesity not curvey. The problem with your logic is where to draw the line. Is it discrimination to not allow people with unibrows, and other facial deformities to model.
Modeling is a competitive environment and they work really hard to look good. Have you seen some of their diets and workout routines? And people who are average or overweight don't put in the same effort. Not everyone can model, just like not everyone can play professional sports. It doesn't mean your ugly it just means you aren't good looking enough.
Maybe we should be encouraging women to grow thicker skin instead of complaining about models. Men handle it fine and so should women.
You keep saying it is discrimination but it isn't. They aren't hired because they don't look like what most people find appealing. They don't sell as well. If their becomes more of a market for it people will start doing it. Basic economica
@nathanp97 that's not true it is discrimaination I'm sorry if you don't unserstand that may be you should read about it. And anyone can chooce to have unibrows or not but you can't chooce your height it is like saying you can't model because you aren't white. Things you can't change are being judge for and it's discriminating.
And there are a lot of short people that are amazing models that don't get the chance to model like the tall ones and it's the same for curvy woman. Almost 1% of catwalk are curvy woman the rest is underweight and like 180 cm tall
I feel like this conversation is pointless because we aren't getting anywhere. I don't see it as discrimination because companies are only doing what is selling. If it didn't sell they wouldn't do it so it isn't discrimination. Companonly care about money not the people, so you can't say they are discriminating.
Fat chick here. I would like to say it promotes body positivity however I think it tends to be biased specifically towards fat women. Skinny women get body shamed as much as us fat chicks do but you never here of the movement pandering to skinny girls, or curvy girls, or even girls like me who are fat but nothing near Tess Holliday and her morbidly obese frame. I think that as a fat woman, if you want to feel beautiful get healthy and get in shape. It’s more beneficial in the long run health wise
I think for some yeah, but there’s a whole plethora of reasons why people are fat. Some don’t metabolize the same as others so even after eating the right food and exercising, the fluctuation in their weight doesn’t shift. People’s biology is sometimes to blame for why their fat and why despite all their efforts, can’t seem to break out of their overweight spell
It's all bullshit. Like if you wanna be fat then be fat. If you feel good about yourself then good. But don't expect me to say how great you look when all I'm seeing is 10 lbs of butter in a 5 lbs sack. Just leave me out of your bullshit and I won't say anything that will offend you. That's the deal 👍
I suspect that the movement was seeded by the process food industry through PR firms and hidden cutouts. The intention is to focus the public away from asking “why is our society getting so obese and what is the root cause”, to believing somehow fat is beautiful. It is not normal, beautiful, or healthy and trends exactly along the same lines as the introduction of GMO, HFCS, and other unnatural stuff in our foods.
No. Body positivity isn't just for fat people either. Degrading people for the way their bodies looks literally does nothing towards fixing their mental or physical health. Being against body positivity is just an excuse to talk shit and accomplish nothing. Also, if you can't maintain some sense of positivity towards your body you're left with zero motivation to actually change.
yeah just a little bit but it's also for people who aren't fat and still have body image issues. Body positive is also for naturally skinny women/men who get told they look anorexic even though they eat normally like everyone else. Also it's for people who just naturally have low self esteem as well.
Pretty much. Body positivity should be for people who have some kind of health condition or disability. Those people really can't help the way they look and because of that they shouldn't be ashamed at all. But those who are overweight as a result of laziness and over-eating shouldn't feel positive about that. I think we just live in a culture that would rather justify and even encourage weak behaviour and a victimhood mentality.
No Da Its people wanting to accept themselves being very unhealthy and unwilling to chance.
Just like the #metoo movement originally started off to shame local highschool guys who unknowingly got a little handsy with their girlfreinds who could not say no.
Some will make any excuse not to do something that requires effort. If you like the way you look, great. Others should not shame you that's wrong. If you don't like the way you look get off the couch and do something about it. It's a choice. I don't shame big people as long as they don't complain about it while doing nothing to change it.
It depends on if its being promoted in relation to people who are very overweight and obese. In that case yes its unhealthy but I think body positivity is important if you're talking about people who are a healthy weight but dont have a lot of muscle tone, scars, stretch Marks, cellulite, post-pregnancy bodies etc.
I knew there would be at least one fat bitch trying to pull the "Muh juhneticks!" and "Muh cundishuns!"
I didn't even make it past SouthernFatty's response, so if there were more, I don't know.
Muh juhneticks... yah, genetics are the reason for lardasses, not eating twelve Big Macs and six large orders of fries, or sitting on the couch for days on end pouring entire packages of Oreos, bags of Cheetos, and 2 liter bottles of soda down your gullet.
I think some people use that as an excuse but the underlying premise is valid and needed. Many people do suffer from body image issues and they may only be 10 to 20 pounds over weight. There are people like Emily Ratajkowski and Channing Tatum that are very lean and could be seen to be the ideal physical specimen of their gender, but those people are in the top 1% and not everyone can look that way. I believe it's fine to be 'normal' whatever that may be and accept yourself.
Not exactly, what they are trying to do is stop people from shaming other for being fat, and also helping themselves by saying "I'm fat, but I can still feel like a human being." What should be happenning is that they should be getting these overweight models to go to a gym, and show that you can be healthy and fat, if that is the way your body is. It shouldn't be about, fat being a good thing. They should be showing that it's ok to be fat and healthy and active.
