I had no idea that it was frowned upon. Are you just talking about it being done in public is what's frowned upon? I guess if that's what you mean some people might feel uncomfortable because they probably feel like they're seeing something they shouldn't. They probably treat it as though they are just seeing a woman in general out in public with her breast out, I think some people have a difficult time mentally compartmentalizing or separating the difference in seeing a woman's breast in a sexual way and a non-sexual way. This is not the woman's fault of course, so if a woman wants to breastfeed in public I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I can understand how it might make some people uncomfortable but those people can always turn and look in the other direction if they are having a difficult time not thinking of it sexually. The problem is with the person who's uncomfortable, not with the person who's breastfeeding their child. But I do understand it so I don't think those people should be treated like they're horrible people if it makes them uncomfortable but someone should maybe kindly explain to them and tell them that they should just sit somewhere else or not look in their direction if it bothers them.
I grew up and live in Central Europe. Breastfeeding is completely normal here, and so is non-sexualised nudity in general...
Most women that I see who breastfeed in public spaces cover their boob (and sometimes the baby too) with a light blanket. I know many highly religious and conservative women who have huge issues with public nudity - they also breastfeed like this.
It's not sexualised here, it's not frowned upon, women aren't shamed for giving their baby or child what it needs when it needs it - I'd say they're actually more likely to be frowned upon if their child is clearly hungry and they don't whip out a bottle or their boobs.
I think it's really interesting how in Netflix's "Sex Life" the main character's husband makes a very disgusted face when his wife's boobs squirt milk in his face during sex - breast milk isn't disgusting or gross, it's what a woman's body provides for their baby to nourish it in a highly efficient way.
Some women can't breastfeed, some choose not to breastfeed in public, but I've never understood why there's such a stigma around this topic in other places of the world...
It's not a big deal, let the mom do what's best for her child. End of story.
I don't frown on breast feeding. I frown on seeing tits in general.
Now before you get mad understand I'm a waiter. If you're showing a ton of cleavage or breastfeeding while I'm working it's awkward. If I try to look more serious to avoid making you feel ogled, which makes me seem tense/aggressive. If I try to look away you may feel ignored/disrespected.
Either way I'm a straight man. I like breasts. I understand you don't want to be sexualized. I understand you don't want to be looked at like a piece of meat. I understand you are a person and breastfeeding is natural (and no I don't expect you to let your baby starve).
But that doesn't matter. I'll be standing over you, looking down and I grew up in a place that constant eye contact is seen as weird, rude or even aggressive at times. It's going to get awkward. All I ask is that you put a towel or cloth over the baby so I don't need to worry about you feeling ogled or creeped out.
My biggest fear is making a breastfeeding woman uncomfortable because I have a big fear of being a creep.
I think you are correct , but personally I certainly don't " frown " upon , its natural and its how things should be , watch " Nestle , criminal company " on youtube for a precis' on how formula milk began , it will shock you.
Think society frowns on public breast feeding , rather than actual breast feeding itself , and they shouldn't , I employed an associate in a land office , she had a baby , I asked her to come back ASAP part time , she said , you mind me breast feeding in the office , and I said " not at all " , just really need you to come back , she did , it worked well , I did however notice some clients did not approve , well bad luck , think they thought she should have been home , massive double standard , then they just assumed we were married , and had a child together , they'd always say " Spoke to your wife " , this was 25 years ago , not sure we've moved too far ahead.

there's nothing wrong with breastfeeding. but there is something wrong with exposing yourself in public. Even if you need to breastfeed in public, please turn around so that you're facing a wall so the entire world (including children) won't have to see your breast. Its not good for children to look either.

And for those who say there's absolutely nothing wrong with breast feeding in front of the entire world. there is absolutely nothing as impolite, discourteous and selfish as that.
Even if I had a baby and needed to breastfeed, I would have the basic courtesy to turn around so that people won't have to see myself exposed.
To be honest, I get weird when I see women breastfeeding in front of me. Mostly because there are many opportunities to feed your child, not right out in the open. Though there are instances where the child can't wait and is screaming for food, but most times I've seen mothers feeding their babies it's at a school event, right in front of a bunch of other children. There are many places/times to breastfeed, and I understand that. Most people I've seen say that mothers should pack bottles when out of the home, or go into somewhere private to whip their breast out to their infant.

To be honest... I don't think I've ever seen a woman just topless. I've always seen them stayed covered and the one breast that was being fed on was usually draped a bit with a baby cloth and the babies head.
My wife went into a private room or she kept herself covered. She didn't just open up and let her naked breasts hang out in public. I would have had a big issue with that if she had done that.
I always here people refer to women being bothered by others when breast feeding but I don't know of any real cases of it happening. I've also never seen or heard of a woman not being discreet about it.

Its not society that freaks out about breast feeding, it is a small but very vocal minority usually women who have never had it as a part of their lives aided and abetted by a certain women's movement.
I come from an extended family where breast feeding is the norm rather than the exception. my mother and sisters could breast feed in public and no one would notice.
There is nothing wrong with formula milk, and if a mother is having problems with sensitivity, production of milk or baby not suckling at the breast.

If you have seen Jim Carry's me, myself and irene, there was a scene that explained it well. The main character, Charlie, was posessed by his dual personality. He saw a Milf, feeding her baby. I live in California. I’ve never seen anyone freak out or frown about a woman breastfeeding in public. I think you’ll find that it’s the religious types that feel a woman’s breast should be hidden away who make the biggest fuss. When I was pregnant with my daughter I had countless doctors, nurses and midwives tell me that there's nothing wrong with using formula, though I kept insisting that I wanted to breastfeed. I felt like they were pushing their own opinions on me instead of listening to my perspective. Of course a baby can survive on both, but it's still a mother's personal choice.

Like they were offended that I didn't choose the easy, but pricey solution from the get-go. I did struggle with breastfeeding due to a severe lack of their help in the first couple of days and chose to stop my production after 4 months because it was too much of a hassle at that point.

I pumped my breastmilk when I was away from my kids only needed a little formula with our oldest. But using formula while breastfeeding can damage supply as it is supply and demand. So I always fed my babies during the night.

I think it's because of their fear of tits... which is due to society/cultural rules. Most people have never even been to a nude beach or they've been reprimanded for looking at tits that are covered at some point in their life. Most of society that I've seen has sexualized the female breast and has associated sexuality with private business. Therefore, because of this, it is considered inappropriate for a woman to whip her breasts out in public to feed a child.
Personally if I were at the grocery store or some other public place I might think to myself "well that's a bit awkward" because that's how I was raised. But I would remind myself that it's none of my business and I'd just ignore it and go on my way.
I don't think it's society that hates it. IRL, I've only ever seen one mother shamed one time, and that poor fellow, well he was surrounded in a heartbeat. Every other time I've seen a mother feeding her child it's always been "congrats" or some form of "good on you and your baby" along with "it's better for them, and cheaper too" sometimes. Well I hate to say this- however, I have noticed lots of men are very judgmental about women who have children in general. Now women, I’ve only seen where they get upset if it’s public breast out breast feeding. I will not show my breasts in public. However, I have no issue with women nursing their babies how they feel comfortable.

It has never bothered me. Most of us were breastfed and it’s ok. We are made this way. It’s a natural and beautiful thing. If I notice someone breastfeeding I won’t stare out of respect, but I am alway fascinated how we are designed. I mean, not to sound corny, but that baby, came out of that woman, and me she is able to sustain it from her own body. Again, It’s an amazing and beautiful thing. No one should be shamed for breastfeeding.

There is nothing unsafe about breastfeeding, unless you are doing it in an unsafe location, in fact breastfeeding is legally protected in every state in the united states of America. The real issue here is a cultural issues that leads people to over sexualize female anatomy, so when people see a woman using her breasts for something that is not sexual, it makes them uncomfortable... or they just sexualize it anyways. Also, the issue is not about it being legal or not. The issue is that there are nasty and bad people out there who can act out of place and risk your and your baby's safety. This is a measure of pre-caution and ethics. Your strawman arguments don't work here.
@TruthBringer And you are talking about something that you have absolutely no experience in. Being out in public automatically puts you at a higher risk for just about anything. Are you saying that we should just all stay at home. Driving a car puts you at a higher risk of dying in a car accident. Having a job increases you risk of workplace harassment. Trusting someone increased your risk of having that trust betrayed. There is risk in everything that you do no matter what you do. But you can't just stop living your life, feeding your baby, going to work, because there is chance that something bad will happen. At the end of the day you have to ask your self if the benefits out way the risk, educate your self the benefits/risks and make an informed choice.

An example is that a woman being raped by her ex or her boyfriend. But if you look deeper, you see that she got with him knowing he had a criminal history or has always been a mischievious bad boy. This was merely an example. So while you say that the majority were raped by people they know, that doesn't take away the fact that they still had some form of power to have prevented it. By not getting in a relationship with such a bad person, for example. Same argument you feminists use when telling men who were burnt with alimony that it is their fault for dating such a woman. The reality of the matter, many people (both men and women) ignore red flags and stilll continue to commit to the wrong sort of people. Also @TruthBringer it seems like feminism has somehow compelled women to believe that being a victim automatically means they are good people and that is definitely not how reality works. Anyone can be a victim of any circumstances in life. For example a drug dealer who got caught selling drugs and then faces police brutality is obviously a victim, but does that mean we should all treat him like a good person and forget that he was a drug dealer? I don’t think so.
