Why do you he's overweight if his parents are not?

He and his dad are the same height, and look how slim his dad is next to him. I imagine his parents don't overeat; if so, why is this 14-year-old overweight?

Maybe he eats in the cafeteria at school with the other kids. Pizza, grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers, spaghetti, Pepsi to drink and a chocolate bar from the vending machine.
His parents eat a more traditional Asian diet at home.

His friends go to his school and are skinnier than him. Here's him and his best friend, who is the same age and goes to the same school. They eat the same thing at school. See how thin that boy is?

That other boy looks like he may be more into playing sports, exercising, and being active.
A lot of kids these days are online texting, or playing XBOX, or reading a lot.
A combination of poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle can sure make a person gain weight.

He looks taller than his dad (look at their shoulders), I think it’s his lifestyle that makes
him overweight. The older generations tend to be more active in their day to day lives whereas the younger ones with access to the internet, video games, social media, etc ends up being more of a homebody.

The kid likes to eat, and possibly has a slower immune system than his parents, who knows, maybe his parents eat like crazy but just have a very fast immune system

Because of a lack of sports and because he might eat junk when he's out of the house like fast food and sweets.

You don't always eat what your parents eat. You don't have the same level of exercise as your parents just because you are related.
