Weight loss, help? Please read, it's kind of confusing.

Okay, so I understand that to lose weight you need to have a calorie deficit. What happens when you reach your goal weight how do you maintain that weight without gaining the weight back and losing more weight at the same time? Do I need to stick to the amount of calories I've been eating weight I was trying to lose weight or as long as I don't go over my BMR, will I be able to maintain my goal weight? Or for the rest of my life do I need to stick to the weight loss program?
