It could be hard to get into for general difficulty, cost, time, etc. What is a hobby you enjoy that was challenging to get into?

playing sports... and that is for sure, sure
it might not seem like it today, although I'm always on my best behaviour I am not shy at all,... however!! as a kid and younger teen I was excruciatingly shy kid and I was terrified of socializing with pretty much anybody that was not familiar enough to me and of course all strangers
never ever liked to be the center of attention, and I'd isolate and keep distance from all the hyper and active kids, but!! sports where my call, it was something that would drive me, well it would lure me into trying and I really wanted to do so, and so much that I actually ended venturing into sports and onto the field, I did little by little... lol
and the first times were always full of anxiety, panic and uncertainty, but, I also got that unmistakable rush of adrenaline that comes with physical activity of this kind, sports and competition, but more than competing it was bonding and reaching, engaging and interacting with others... and in a way in which it did not have to be about me, I was never the target, I was never the focus... it was always the ball, and the game
all in all, it was as incredibly difficult to first get into it as it was rewarding and a very life changing and life defining moment that is still making a great difference in my life, and for the better as well

Most of my hobbies were deceivingly simple when first engaging in them, only to find that they lead to great investments of thought, time and money to pursue them as I like.
The one hobby that I did find difficult to enter is the study of music theory. The fact that music theory is a combination of science, personal choices made by composers over the centuries, and compromises that were necessarily made in order for some instruments to work well, made it frustrating for me to teach myself as an adult.
As a child, having had only basic music training from formal educational systems where the mode of teaching music theory was presented as, "Here's the way it is. Don't question it. Tomorrow we'll be moving on to the next topic", I questioned nearly every concept that was presented to me, but never received satisfactory explanations.
Fast forward to adulthood when my interest in music theory was rekindled. I pursue my questions doggedly until I'm able to discover proper answers or formulate my own interpretations of stated 'theories'.
My quest for the truth of music continues. It will never end.
Great question!

Rock climbing. I love to climb things (trees, the side of a house, you name it) and like to do rock climbing. The main problem where I live is there aren't really any places close by to do it. I've been rock climbing on family trips to Colorado and New Mexico with experienced pros who could teach and provide the equipment, and thoroughly enjoyed it. With travel and the cost involved to do it safely, it's not something I can do regularly. I can participate in shooting sports and hunting, which I've been doing since I was about 12 years old; there are plenty of places near me to shoot, but I'd love to do more rock climbing.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm…
well… I would say drawing, because it was something I always wished I was good at and wanted to do… but I never did because I absolutely SUCK at it and I’m also not creative so I never know what to draw…
but I did get encouraged, and pushed to try… I bought a whole kit lmfao… and now I turn to drawing or scribbling when I’m stressed or upset… keeping my hands busy like that, is super helpful to me and it helps calm and relax me!
now…. did I get better at drawing…? I would say no lmfao… but my source says my drawings are cute… and I like them so that’s all that matters😁

Basketball was the hardest to start and maintain.
Because not a lot of solid programs dedicated to girls basketball.
My parents had to drive me an 1 1/2hr away 3 or 4 times a week to a top notch trainer that would train a girl.
So that was hard. And first few years playing for a horrible rec team with terrible coaches and half the games got canceled because the teams we played wouldn't show up to the games.
I think the hardest hobby for my to have gotten in to was building model air plains and boats. Just because their is SO much work and I always found I didn’t have the time to finish them. So I hade some 8 projects I tried and then lost parts and didn’t want to get rid of them. It was really sat. But then I got a girl friend and she was by far the easiest hobby to get in to… I could work that model up all day long!
Cooking. It'd require me lots of organisation skills with the trash disposing, first. Then you'd watch for every single detail:
Then concentration...
... not too hot, not too less, not too long. Flip the steak like every 2-minutes and I can tell you... you'll never ever have the chance to check your phone.
And the same goes with making salad, the taste, and everything etc. Etc.
Getting back into Quilting took a lot of time, but I made the decision to start it up again while pregnant with our second child. Now I am so happy that I got back into it! Our house is filled with all beautiful lap quilts and a few queen size bed quilts. I have made time to do very small baby quilts for some of the firstborns in our extended family :-)
Knitting and painting. Knitting because it is very tedious. Painting because there is so much more to learn for it to look good than I anticipated. I had to learn how to draw for square one which in itself has multiple skill sets to build. Then I had to learn about color theory. Then about different strokes techniques. It is a hobby that you could spend a lifetime trying to get better at.

Reading. Probably because, like most other people today, I've spent way too much time on the internet and don't have the greatest attention span. It's getting better though.
But still...😬
It is less of a hobby and more starting a lifestyle, but it would have to be farm animal care. There is a lot that goes into it, and I am still learning. Currently we have 10 chickens, and after we move, we aim to get more and perhaps pigs or cows.
I had many hobbies. I built electronic devices, went 4 wheeling, surfing, scuba diving, and marathon running. I think surfing was the hardest. It was hard to learn to do.
Plastic model building - my dad got me into it - and today I enjoy building them - problem is the paintjobs don’t come out great or even good. That’s why they never get finished 🤬🤬🤬
Wooden ship modeling. The tools are prohibitively expensive. But it is very fulfilling.
Knitting. Because it looks easy but it certainly isn’t!
I started playing football when I was 16, Because I had small. boobs I was put into the boys, the boys found it funny so would pull my shorts down
Learning pressure so I didn't over cut or cut my hands again
Sports because sometimes I'm just toooo sore. Also, ice skating as of right now because I don't have a car right now.
Twitch streaming because I have no self confidence.
Flying. Lots of cost and time
Gardening for sure!
Photography, so much to learn
