Worst... Wedding... Proposal... Ever

Somewhere on my bucket list, I'd always wanted to be part of a wedding proposal. I think that moment is so special between two people and to be part of that, I thought, would be just as special. I love, love, what can I say. So a few years ago, on a random Tuesday, my wish came true when this nice looking clean cut man strolled into my workplace with a bushel of roses, a ring, and a cd.

I was a supervisor at my job at the time, and I got a call over the walkie that there was someone at the front desk needing to speak to a supervisor. I usually HATED those calls because it was a long walk to the front and it was always someone super irate over literally nothing. So I came down expecting the usual, but there this guy was. My staff in the booth were already gushing and I kind of put two and two together. Very politely he told me he wanted to propose to his girlfriend *Aria, one of my staff, and he wanted to do it over the loud speaker which would have broadcast this to four floors of about 800 people all at once including her. I was all for it, but my manager vetoed that because it was for business purposes only.

Barring that, I told him he could use our auditorium for his proposal since we had no events going on that day. He told me he'd brought a cd with a song that was very special to them and just wanted this moment to be perfect and a surprise. That is *literally* all I needed to hear. I immediately put out a call to our AV guy to come and film. My manager ran and got red butcher paper to act as a "red carpet." I called my assistant manager who ran down and set up to man the AV booth and the cd with another supervisor. It was all coming together.

What we helped him plan, was he was going to be standing there behind the velvet curtains on stage. The cd would be playing as she walked down the "red carpet" and then the curtains would open, he would get down on a knee, and propose and life would be amazing thereafter, they'd get married, have 2.5 kids and a dog and live to be old enough to have grandkids...

So my manager, the AV guy now with his professional video camera set up on a tripod, and I are now behind the curtains where we are hiding at a vantage point where we could see her walk in once the curtains opened. Boom, the music is playing, I radio for her to come down because we "needed her help to set up for an unscheduled event," and then we all just wait.

Finally she opens the door. She's confused and walking in wondering where everybody is. She walks down the "red carpet," it's all happening, I'm tearing up next to my manager just seeing it all, curtain opens, and...And...ANNNNDDD?!?

She is PISSED. He gets down on one knee, starts in on his speech, and she scowls and crosses her hands across her chest. I look over at the av guy and my manager who are equally confused, but it gets worse. The two start arguing some things we couldn't really make out at the distance we were at. I signal the AV guy to stop filming which he already had. *Aria looks in our direction and tells us, we can come out of hiding, she knows we are there. So we do sort of slink out like WTF is happening.

So we walk passed this murdered proposal gone wrong to the AV booth in the back and my assistant manager tells me that he just got a call from one of our other staff informing him that this isn't some now heartbroken guy. This guy is her STALKER ex-boyfriend who's apparent last ditch effort to get her back in his life, was to attempt to propose to her. Thankfully armed security was literally right outside the door, so we ran and got him, but the guy did manage to leave peacefully after some extended arguing. All of us apologized so friggin' hard to *Aria because we obviously didn't know any of her backstory and she'd never told any of us (why would she, that's her private life). I was mortified thinking this guy would have proposed where 800 people could hear it or worse could have been violent. YIKES!!!!

So "my" magical bucket list proposal ended in a restraining order. Seriously. I never saw the guy again at work thankfully and as far as I know, neither did she.
