Is anyone in second cousin marriage?
1 yI feel like it might have a risk. I know I've sometimes heard that if two cousins marry that they get sterilized since having any kids would cause issues.

u 1 y"In April 2002, the Journal of Genetic Counseling released a report which estimated the average risk of birth defects in a child born of first cousins at 1.1–2.0 percentage points above the average base risk for non-cousin couples of 3%, or about the same as that of any woman over age 40." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin_marriage
The increased risk for a second cousin mating would be approximately one-fourth the risk for a first cousin marriage, due to the decreased statistical probability of matching recessive genes for inherited birth defects.
My answer is not intended as an endorsement for cousin marriages but simply as a statement of the genetic risks involved.
50 Reply Why would someone be marrying their cousin in the first place lol So what is the risks of marrying a first cousin?

@Finchie40
I read it online yesterday that it’s common in Middle East and I couldn’t believe it. - 1 y
It's the standard go-to for marriage in clans. "Keep it in the family."

@Finchie40 Saw an article some years ago that Jerry Lee Lewis - singer married his 1st Cousin.

@DryGermanGuy clans?

Study says cousin marriage practice is not good. But in many countries and in other religions have practiced this cousin marriage thing and yes I have seen some disadvantage of cousin marriage but yeah we should marry a person who are not our direct blood relation so second marriage is okh but not good for practice.

It also affects the familial relationships too. If you breakup or divorce, you still have to see them at family gatherings and stuff. Definitely not the same as a regular ex.

@PBandJ_Nerd oh that it even big problem
It's possible. You're still a direct relative with your partner.
For example, look at current British king. Elizabeth II, while a great Queen, was a cousin of her husband - both directly related from Victoria. The European monarchs are almost all direct descendants of Victoria and Albert.
Charles is a cousin of Diana - a distant one, but a cousin nonetheless.
William will be the first monarch not actually related to his spouse, so George will be the first monarch not a result of in-breeding for roughly a millennium.00 Reply

lol!
The problem with marrying a relative is that you likely have the same recessive genes. So your kids are likely to suffer from recessive genetic defects. Though for every shared recessive gene between you and your partner your kids only have a 25% chance of having that particular condition. The closer the relative the more likely to have more shared recessive genes. I think that with second cousins the risk is only slightly higher than finding someone with a shared recessive gene in the general public; and it is typically only one. As opposed to the multiple ones you would have with say a cousin (~2-3) or sibling (~6-10).

1 yA cursory examination of medical info tells me that the risk of genetic defects in a child between non-related, general population individuals is anywhere from 1% to 2%. In second cousins, it's 3.125%. First cousin marriages are the highest risk as you could share anywhere up to 12% of genetic material.
10 ReplyCousin stuff is good only to fool around, not marriage.

1 yIt still has risks, just minor compared to first cousin marriage.
I still wouldn't reccomend it. My mother's family has much mental illness running rampant in it because for a while they were almost all cousin marriages.
10 Reply504 opinions shared on Marriage & Weddings topic. My dad was related to someone who unknowingly married a second cousin. They found out because their kid died to a genetic liver disease that both of his parents happened to be carriers of.
10 ReplyNot really. First cousins it's doubly worse than unrelated, meanwhile 2nd is less ofc. And when we say double it's still under 10% so it's really not much different.

1 yYes, it’s risky and can lead to issues as well. Even third and fourth cousins is highly questionable though sometimes distant cousins tangle with one another unknowingly especially in areas that are more rural communities where everyone’s related.

I know a married couple that were second cousins and they had five normal kids but it was the grandchildren that had physical issues and were screwed up.

It's legal in our state, so someone must have done some research on it and figured it out.

1 yPeople marrying related people can get blood work done to make sure you both don't carry certain genetic issues when having kids..
