First-cousins are 12.5% related, and first-cousin matings have been common throughout all of human existence and they are still very common in some cultures. The genetic risk of first-cousin matings is 4% to 6% vs. 3% for unrelated matings. However, if the parents of first-cousin matings were also first-cousins, the genetic risks are higher because your parents are more related than unrelated parents, and the risk increases for each subsequent generation of first-cousin matings.
Double first-cousin matings (the same 4 grandparents) are 25% related, the same as half-siblings, uncle-niece, and aunt-nephew matings. Such matings have significant genetic risk, but I could not find the percentage of genetic risk vs. unrelated matings.
Generally first-cousin mating have low genetice risk, but if the parents were related, genetic counseling is recommended. Even where legal, double-first-cousin mating should be avoided.

u 6 moNo, I don't, but I know people who have married slightly more distant relatives, such as first cousins once removed.
You need to know that first cousin marriages are legal in about half of the US states and in much of the rest of the world. First cousin marriages are not forbidden by the Bible or the Quran. And, in many parts of the world, first cousin relationships are encouraged, because of tradition and for practical considerations; if a bridal dowry must be paid, a first cousin marriage keeps wealth within the extended family. Finally, the incidence of genetic defects in the offspring of first cousin matings is only slightly higher than the incidence for the general population at large.

I don’t think that happened in the last 100 years…?
6 moActually yes I do know a guy who married his cousin. They were both about 60 at the time and had just retired. I think they had discussed it for a long time and when they retired from their jobs, he moved to where she lived and got married. Well, at their age, they would not have been inbreeding. LOL

Anonymous(45 Plus)6 moYes. It’s gross and sad. Your kids can come out albino or sick with low immune levels to fight disease or deformed.. why risk that when there’s a billion people in the world 🥴 also always check your blood type when deciding to have kids because this can happen even if you’re not related if you have the same blood type.. something families even worse. Don’t be gross

6 moSome say incest is the best however unless you want your kids looking like YODA or worse it’s probably not a good idea. As for me I don’t know anyone who has married their first cousin however I don’t go around asking people that either.
If you are thinking about marrying your cousin & you are into that back woods shit go for it. I’m not judging you & as they say you like what you like.
Good luck & may the force be with you.

6 moi have a feeling my uncle might have married someone that we're related to. she had the same last name, but we never knew much about her family. dna testing wasn't a big thing back then and hispanics have a lot of similar names even if ours isn't common. so, it is possible that it happened.
00 ReplyNo, I do not, personally. I've heard of people marrying their 3rd cousin or distance cousins.

This isn't ethical, but sometimes people get married like this.

@RandomGirl42 I'd wage that Mitch McConnell is a result of a first cousins marriage, but maybe he just acts like he's been mentally challenged his entire life? I don't know.
