The Most Overly Used Words and Phrases of 2017 (That Just Need to Die Already)

1. Fake News

Just so you are aware, not everything is fake news, but thanks to a certain president, everyone uses this to explain literally everything they hear. Rather then actually do any independent research themselves, people just throw this phrase out there every time anything pops up in their news feed, on the news, in a paper, or someone mentions something they heard. This is actually problematic because there is real news happening everyday but you have so many idiots just automatically condemning anything they hear as fake news, that it's creating a dangerous atmosphere where real news is trashed because people actually want to believe that everything and everyone is out to get them and that nothing can possibly be real any more.

2. Feminism

You spend five minutes on the internet, and you will see and hear this word used to describe anything even remotely having to do with women or women's issues. If a woman has a problem, something to say, disagrees with a man, disagrees with a woman, breathes, someone yells FEMINISM! at the top of their lungs. Most have no clue what real feminism is, and when those in the know explain it, they ignore that and just use the word ad nauseam because they think they know what they are talking about but largely they have no clue and use it more troll rather then have an actual understanding of it.

3. Special Snowflake

You could be complaining about your latest surgery that had you in so much pain, you blacked out, and someone will say, why are you complaining, you're no special snowflake. This has replaced the old phrase, "someone out there has it worse," or "everyone has problems" to try and check or shame anyone with any sort of complaint about anything. What's worse is people use it to try and suppress real issues that need to be addressed. They think by putting this stamp on the issues, that it makes them less real or important or that they shouldn't be discussed, but you really have to look into who is over using this phrase and the motives behind it.

4. No offense but...

If you have to preface something with this overused phrase, odds are, what will come after is going to offend the other person. Seriously, if you're already basically apologizing before you say something, then you probably shouldn't say it, or just say it knowing that you're probably going to ruffle some feathers.

5. F--kboi

Back in the day, we used to call these guys Tools, but here we are in 2017 and f--kboi has taken over. If you're under the age of 20, odds are you've overused this to describe just about any guy you don't really like all that much. You've probably written a whole take on it, or asked a question with it in the title. Tools...f--kboi's...they aren't going to go away. They have always existed, and I'm sure by next year, there will be a new name for them.

6. Low Key

Are you low key upset about this mytake? Are you low key mad you were five minutes late for work today. Are you low key, low key, about being low key. AHHHH! We get it. You are only ever sort of upset about things these days, but it's inconsequential to the functioning of life. If something really bothers you, just do something about it.

7. Triggered

"I'm so triggered right now. Can you talk to me as an adult, and not like I'm your child." Mental health care workers have used the terminology for years to describe events that can, for example, "trigger" one's PTSD or how depression can be "triggered" by the changing of the seasons, but now, this word has run wild in our vernacular, used to either seriously describe, or more often then not, sarcastically describe an event that makes one mad. The word itself can actually trigger someone to get pissed off which is why it has become a favorite of trolls when they want to pick a fight with someone online.

8. Lit

"This party is so lit." Used to describe just about anything good these days, everything is lit. The party, your dog, the song on the radio, a cool sign you saw that one time. Sigh...

9. Cuck

A cuck is a derogatory slang term for a weak, effeminate, or inadequate man. Cuck has also been blended with conservative to produce cuckservative, often shortened back to cuck. Both cuck and cuckservative are especially used online by white nationalists to insult US Republican politicians they judge as insufficiently conservative. The term is sometimes thrown at men (see MGTOW) whom some other men tend to think of as just bending the knee to any woman they meet or not having enough backbone and being strong enough to 'fight' against feminism and marriage.

10. I can't even

...then, um, don't.
