The Power Of A Memory

The Power Of A Memory

Tea lights, like the one sitting next to me on my nightstand. What do they remind you of?

I always think of moving into my first home outside of my parents' house. I was 17 and there was a week-long power outage starting the day I moved into my new appartment. I went out and bought a huge pack of these things and put them everywhere. They're comforting to me. Warm, yellow light.

The Power Of A Memory

A simple blue and white dress.

This, such a common article of clothing, reminds me so much of my little sister. She had this crazy obsessive sailor/navy phase as a kid, and it's died down a bit, but she's still that little sea-looking girl at heart. Every time I see her, she still makes sure to wear things like this.

The Power Of A Memory

A scratched-up '68 Chevelle. Not relatable for everyone, but something will correlate with it.

Ah, young love; First love. There was always a rusty, scuffed up Chevelle sitting in my first boyfriend's driveway. Turned out, it was the car his father had owned before he died. Love fixed it up in our teen years and ran off to LA. So many memories in that car... makes me wonder if he still has it.

So, what's my point?

Just by seeing a simple object, you could be thrown headfirst into a pool of nostalgia. That's some pretty powerful shit right there.

The power of a memory is not to be questioned, for that item reminds you of a time in your life when you needed something to hold onto. These objects, these memories, these are what keep us from forgetting the most important parts of our lives, stage by stage.
