I've had pets in my world for the majority of my life. My dog died when I was 17, and my cat died last March leaving my world quite different.
Sadness is harder to deal with

Those studies about cats reducing stress levels weren't wrong. Life is a nightmare and it's comforting having a furball to hang out with in between reality's never ending nonsense. When they're gone you're pretty much on your own with that.
Random noises in the apartment are worrisome

Animals are always off doing whatever they want and are usually the cause of random background noise. When you realize you don't have any animals to blame random creaks and bumps in the night you start to wonder if they've returned as a ghost or if you're finally in a horror movie.
Pets are the burdens we choose

Having pets is not easy. Grooming, food, toys, and all the other things need aren't cheap. Your world is turned upside down when you realize they're sick and you don't know how to fix them which is another expensive issue. They're physically and emotionally draining. They die. Obviously. Even when you're as prepared as you possibly can be for the death of your furry family member it's never really enough. Having animals in my life was the best and worst thing that's ever happened to me.
Feel free to add any other observations there are to be made about life after pets.
