Can you solve this?

It is approximately 10am in mid-July and you have just crash landed in the Sonora Desert, near the Mexico-USA border. The plane has completely burnt out, only the frame remains. Miraculously, the 10 passengers are uninjured but the pilot has been killed.

The pilot was unable to tell anyone of your position before the crash. However, ground sightings taken shortly before the crash suggest that you are about 65 miles off the course filed in your flight plan. A few moments before the crash, the pilot indicated you were about 70 miles south east of a mining camp. The camp is the nearest known settlement.

The immediate area is quite flat and, except for the occasional thorn bush and cacti, is rather barren.

Before the plane caught fire, your group was able to save the 10 items in the list below.

Your task is to rank them according to their importance to your survival in the desert. In pairs, rank the items starting with 1 for the most important, down to 10 for the least important. Be prepared to justify your decisions!

1. Knife- A knife can be used for cutting, killing and doubling as a pen can keep track of days and supplies and also writing a last goodbye and a will. If someone was hurt you could rip or cut clothing to help compress a wound. If an animal or a cactus needed to be cut you have a knife.

2. Water- One of the main things humans couldn't survive long without is water, especially in a hot dessert where water is scarce and you tend to sweat more.

3. Mirror- Great way to help start a fire! Although it's hot in the afternoon the temperature drops at night and a fire could help keep you warm and ward off animals. Plus there should be plenty of tinder around help start a fire with.

4. Parachute- Since the plane is down to it's frame it won't be as helpful in protecting us from the sun so we could use it to cover part of the plane. Usually parachutes are partially translucent so it wouldn't be able to completely block the sun but it's better than nothing. The parachute also comes with many strong strings. We probably won't need all the strings to secure it to the plane so we could cut them and use them for something else.

5. First aid- No ones hurt YET but First aid kits usually come with alcohol, ointments, scissors, tape, and gloves which can be very useful for injuries or anything else.

6. Gun- If one out of the 10 people happen to know how to use a gun then this may be useful, if not I would put it lower on the list. catching animals in the dessert is HARD when all you have is a gun. It may just be our best chance of getting meat but the fact that someone has to know how to use it and it has limited bullets makes this item not as useful.

7. Coats- Like I said before, it gets cold at night so these could come in handy. They may be able to be used to block out more sun in the plane or to be worn to avoid sun burn but you obviously run a risk of getting overheated and sweating too much.

8. Rain coat- It's not as useful because there's only one but you could use it when foraging for food or tender. On the off chance you find a stream you could also use it to take back some water.

9. Torch- It's basically like having one XL match :/ once it burns out it's done for.

10. Sunglasses- These wouldn't be very important and they'd be the first thing I'd give up if I had to. They help the user to see better in the sun but they only "protect" the eyes and that's it.
