What are your thoughts on organ donation?
Will you donate your organs when you die?
What are your thoughts on organ donation?
Heck yeah! If I die suddenly but the parts of my body can be used to save other people like children or someone's parent then by all means take my organs, take my face and skin, bone and muscle too! I don't plan on being buried anyway because that shit expensive and bad for the environment. Some people like my mother opt out because they just think of it as weird but when you see/ hear of peoples stories of having to wait on lists for organs while they slowly die it just makes it seem so much more selfish to NOT donate the organs you're already not using. Trust me, when you're 55 and diagnosed with lung cancer and need a lung transplant your gonna wish more people would donate their organs.
Every Belgian citizen is donator by default unless he had declared otherwise.
Same in Austria :)
I have apprehensions, some organs have a really short shelf life so they will cut into you as soon as you are legally dead. That notion does not sit well with me as I wager the possibility they were wrong or miraculously I revived. If it were something I could grow back then I wouldn't mind, but generally I want to be dead for at least 24 hours, some of these organs have a shelf life less than a day so they start cutting as soon as they can. If they took a portion of my liver or some skin that would be alright, but major organs no thanks.
Hope I didn't ruin it for you. Do what your comfortable with, it has some good attributes, but it can also be a waste if your organs are rejected.
you're*
In the UK we now have an opt out scheme. As in everyone over 18 donates unless you opt out or in a excluded group
https://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/uk-laws/organ-donation-law-in-england/
So it’s quite simple here
Same in Austria! In Germany, you have to opt in though (I did, didn't think twice about it because it just makes sense for me due to my upbringing). Most people here don't like thinking about donating their organs - they tried changing the law to be "opt out", but it wasn't passed, so it's still "opt in".
@tallandsweet with modern car safety it just seems better to have an opt out system.
It just makes more sense and organs are fresher

When I first got my driver's license I put down yes I wanted to as time went by I started to learn that if the family of the person that died donates the organs they have to pay for transplant and I said no way I would never do that then I would not want to put a bill on my kids for $250,000 or something for giving somebody a piece of of me to keep them alive
Let just state that I'm unwilling to be an organ donor for fear of the ambulance take an extra trip around the block cause I'm a match for someone with MONEY. No, they do not bill the organ donors family, if they did, nobody would ever donate their organs. Besides, who you going to bill if they have no family. Furthermore, do you have any idea how much people are willing to pay for black-market organs...
Well that's the thing I would want to sell it on the black market it's first come first serve I just wouldn't want my son or my daughter to be stuck with the bill because I gave my heart or my lungs or my kidney to somebody that needed it and then my kids would have to pay an outrageous bill for the removal and installation of my organs no know if it is to give somebody a chance for life I would say yes take them but I'm not going to put my kids in debt because I want to be nice or if I want to save somebody's life
Would you like for me to look up some articles on this to get you to believe that they do not or have ever billed the organ donors family a single dime. I know this because for my university senior CS project a team of us worked on an Organ Procurement Database for the regional Organ Procurement Services.
We followed them through every step of their procedure, from actually having to request permission, even if they have put down on the DL that they wish to donate their organs... you still must receive permission from their next of kin. The checked box that says you wish to be an Organ Donor... is very helpful in getting that permission only.
What is the most common question asked, "Will this cost us anything to have done?" No, it will not cost you anything at all and we will be sure to allow for open casket viewing if you wish. Second most asked question asked, "Do we get any money for doing this?" answer: "No, that is why it is called a donation... we are not allowed by law and medical ethics to provide you with a monetary benefit for your donation. We can just offer you the fact that a part of your loved one will go on living and making another's life possible."
It has to be the hardest thing I have ever seen people have to do and most cannot do it for long due to the emotional toll it takes to have to ask people who just lost their loved one... "Hey, can we like harvest their organs? They like said it would be ok on their drivers license..." I couldn't do it and I would hate for the people who loved me to have to go through something like that.
@BethanYou Excellent points, thank you :) still crazy how many myths there are surrounding the topic!
Well those people from the goodness of their heart you know they want to help just like I did when I first got my driver's license I said heck yeah sign me up and I would say 10 to 15 years but by really and then that's when I found out what the truth was about it and I basically almost went in right then and there to get my driver's license changed just in case you're going to freak accident happen so I thank you for this question because a lot of people don't know the answer are the truth to this they would be amazed
But, @ohshee, if you decide to donate your organs your family won't have do pay a dime, like @bethanyou said.

What planet is this on?
That's complete bullshit and not even enforceable.
That's like having a law "Your adult son was a drunk driver who was killed and killed a family. Since he's unavailable to do time for the crime, we're going to incarcerate your daughter for life."
This violates the primary rules of law - at least in the USA and other sane countries.
No, because even if I tried my organs would be rejected. - lol
I stopped donating blood 20 years because prescription medications that I began to take made me unsuitable as a donor.
To illustrate the depth of the problem, one day a huntsman spider bit me while I was in the shower. A few minutes later I found the spider dead on the floor.
Oh wow, I didn't know that's a thing... Pretty crazy how medication can change your body!
That spider story is crazy :o
@tallandsweet
It was a combination of an anti-depressant called Mirtazapine (nasty side effects, do not use it), Valium and another anti-anxiety drug, the name of which I cannot recall.
The total effect was that my blood became toxic and my urine was a more effective herbicide than Roundup.
I felt sorry for the spider. The huntsman spider is harmless to humans and is useful to have around the house, because they do not spin webs and eat bugs (and even other spiders). I welcome them as semi pets around the house.
Yup, no issue for me here. If I'm dead, I'm not using it, if someone else can make use of it, why deny them?
I understand there are religious preferences here, as a Christian I believe I am going to be getting a "new body" later on. That gives me even fewer reasons to hoard body parts :P
Of course i will. I have several old Casio, a Yamaha and a Korg Keyboard they can have too.
hahaha good one!
@HamburgerFries :D
LOL :D
I don't trust doctors, who may have a financial incentive to sell your organs. One must only look at the medical profession today. They are not In the business of making people better, they are in the business of treating sick people and prescribing drugs.
You're perfeclty entitled to your opinion :)
Of course, I've already signed a thing saying that's fine. I don't need them i would be dead and not know anyway. Better than maggots just eating them if someone can use them even if it's just for research or something.
No, because they are my organs and someone else will benefit from them so that's a no, ain't nothing free in this world, either I get paid for them or nobody will get them.
Abso fucking lutely.
Being a transplant recipient I wouldn't have a new cornea if my donor hadn't made that choice.
So upon my death I'm doing the same. Whatever they can use they can take. I don't need it any more
Yes, because I plan to get embalmed and preserved, and removing all organs is mandatory to the process, plus I'll be really glad that they'll help someone who'll need them for their life!
Yes bc it will help someone else. I'm not gonna need them anymore... people don't for religious reasons? What religious reasons are there?
There hardly are any valid religious reasons, most religions don't ban organ donations! It's just that some people use religion as an excuse instead of coming up with a real reason.
No for non-religious reasons. I wouldn't want them to go to a person who I wouldn't like if I met them in life. Since there is no control over that I won't donate them at all
I think that's actually a good reason to say no to an organ donation.
@abc3643 yes, that is exactly what I am saying. Our country is close to civil war and you find my statement hard to understand? We could literally be shooting at each other in the streets but you can't fathom that I wouldn't want my organs to go to someone who I feel is destroying the country or is bad for the country
@abc3643 you are a joke
They can have the whole damn body, it's not like I'll be using it anyway.
You can donate to a med school
@lycanthrope3 She did call dibs, those are the rules.
@ChrisMaster69 Go to the old folks home and start calling dibs.
@ms_vanderquack funny you should mention that, we organised a bus trip out…
@ChrisMaster69 It would be an effective way of dealing with the overpopulation problem. not to mention helping the economy out a bit.
If I don't die from a disease and if my organs are healthy, I don't see any reason to not donate them when I die. I can save someone's life.
probably a good idea but don't over think it and get creeped-out
That's probably right!
No, I am worried if I ended up in ER/ICU they'd let me die due to how valuable my organs would be.
I can't speak for the US health care system, but I know that almost no doctor in Central Europe would think that way luckily. It's understandable that you're worried about that though.
Hard to really know unless you have a lot of experience in the medical system, I think.
Well, I don't need my organs after I die, and honestly I wouldn't care after I die either (Since I would be dead🤷🏻♀️). You get my point.
Not only am I willing to donate my organs, but my pianos too.
My organs and for research since they're useless for transplant as I am diabetic. Have been for 46 years. Hopefully, they can use me to find a cure for this.
No, just like cremating, I dislike it because I want a Christian burial.
Do you think that Christianity and organ donation contradict one another?
Not directly, but I feel that I want to be buried 'whole', the good old way. It also depends what kind of research it goes towards.
I understand :)
Why not? I don't need them anymore and donating my organs could save many people's lives!
