I know bicycle riding is pretty much universal, but sometimes I think there's a misconception that women don't enjoy camping/hiking/backpacking as much as men do, but I'd generally beg to differ, as there seems to be plenty of women online who are into outdoor/adventure activities. I used to read Backpacker Magazine as well and women seemed to be equally represented there too (not to mention their main contributor/editor is female). However, it's odd in that I have never met a girl who is into these things, nor have I seen as many women out on the trails and in the woods as men in my area (even with a partner). So, I figured I would conduct a poll to see if the women here like doing some of these things too.
On the flip side, I also do a lot of fishing, but no matter where I go, and regardless of if it's from shore or in a boat, there seems to be a startling lack of women who are out on the water to do fishing. At least in my area anyway, I'd say 98% are male and it's probably an even higher percentage than that. Seriously. I have never quite understood why this is, but it's always a welcome sight to see women fishermen too. I know of one woman who is one of the most avid fisherman whenever I see her out on the water, but I just never understood why fishing doesn't seem to be as much of a passion for women as it tends to be for some guys. Not to say it isn't for all women, of course, but fishing just seems to be such a male-dominated activity.
With that said, I can see how it may feel a bit daunting and/or isolating for women to want to get into such a male-dominated pastime, even if they have an interest/passion for it. Which is understandable, but I still wonder how it got to this point to begin with. Why it always seems to be a mostly male thing.
Anyway, thanks for reading and I'm interested to hear from the women here about your related interests and insight. ๐
