Why do you think that China is locking down at a time the rest of the world is returning to normalcy after the pandemic?

The predominant variant of COVID-19 (omicron) is far less deadly while also being more contagious than previous variants. This suggests that COVID is reaching an "equilibrium" with it's new host (humans) and other countries are learning to live with it. However, China is locking down hard and struggling to contain the virus. Why do you think that they're doing this?

in my opinion there are one of two explanations:
1. They are doing it for propaganda purposes or
2. More likely, COVID poses a unique danger to China. For roughly 2 decades, pollution has been a major problem in China. Although recently air pollution has dropped to below what it was in 1990, it can cause the population to suffer from long term health affects so omicron could very well be as deadly to an average Chinese person as delta is to people elsewhere in the world. Here in the US, we saw something similar happen with abnormally high mortality rates in Native American communities because many people had chronic illnesses which resulted from toxic waste being dumped on the reservations.

One of the big things that a lot of people don't realize about China is how densely populated it is. To the point where over 90% of the countries population is concentrated in the same area. This does of course make it a good breeding ground of a virus. Simply because of how quickly it can spread through highly populated areas that are also densely populated.

So their policies when it comes to combating the spread of a virus have to be much more stringent then most countries. Because it does create a situation where they might a situation where they might have the situation somewhat under control only for it to go completely off the rails again. Due to having a high population and densely populated areas.

Their vaccine is not as efficient as the mRNA vaccine. Although that might change with variants of covid, and there are variants of covid that kill 10-40% of the infected (MERS, SARS).

I guess they don't want to take risks. They were the first dealing with the virus, so they learned about its effects first.
Also they have an huge population, if there was a massive outbreak they would lose millions of people and their hospitals would collapse.

No one outside of the CCP knows if the current 'Lockdowns' are due to there being problems controlling Covid or they are being used for another reason which they are not disclosing.
