How good are you at solving problems?

Question

I was thinking back at how when faced with a big problem how much of a dance it can be to keep up.

Life is hurling extra shovelfuls around today. Each one has a significant roadblock. Just one of those exhausting days we all get.

So far, I’ve managed to keep on top of them. One of my biggest challenges is finally in less pain so happier and resting, so I can relax and worry slightly less, for now. *sigh*

How good are you at handling general problems? Do you rely on others for help or deal with them yourself?

Depends on what type of problems you mean.

I ask myself what I must do & must achieve instead of asking what I can do - at least in a workplace setting. That resolves many problems.

However in general life some problems just don't have good solutions. It can be a choice of bad choices. So there is no point trying to find a good solution and you need to accept there are only bad ones.

Thirdly in general life accept you can only do what you can do. You mention "finally in less pain" so I am guessing this is you helping someone close. People will go to the ends of the earth to help family and run themselves ragged. But there are limits on what you can do and you need to accept that and not beat yourself up about your natural limits.

If I have inferred wrong I'll be happy.

I'm good at it, so I made it my job... lol

but yeah, work can be nothing much compared to life... life can seem relentless sometimes but as much as challenge it has given me the support of those around me, which I definitely take from time to time, at the right time...

and other times, they show up because they know it's needed and because I am not noticing that myself or not wanting to see it

I definitely didn't make it all the way here by myself... lol

I’m good at solving work problems. Those I can’t handle on my own, I usually “know a guy.” Being good at networking helps find solutions, so I think the two go hand in hand.

That's my biggest strength, and it's a huge part of my job.

I'm an Audio/Video Integrator, which means I design and install systems with video (TVs and projectors), audio (indoor and outdoor speakers and the gear that runs them), networking & WiFi, security cameras, "smart home" devices such as smart locks, pet doors, and lighting, and home automation.

Every job is a custom job, and many are extremely complex, and I often have to figure out how to run wires in existing homes without those wires being visible, and that's a very difficult problem all by itself. But perhaps the most difficult situations are when I'm called in to fix a big system that someone else installed - often a company that's no longer in business, or that the customer doesn't want to deal with anymore. I have to come in and try to figure out what the people before me did and how they did it - and it seems that following best-practices in my industry is the exception rather than the rule. Nothing is ever labeled, pieces of equipment are hidden, wires are spliced in crazy places, and questionable equipment choices aren't uncommon.

The amount of information I have to know and understand in order to reverse-engineer a system with 20 or 30 audio or audio & video zones, with hundreds of wires that disappear into walls and emerge in random places all over the home, is enormous. Time is money, and if you aren't very good at solving problems, then you're going to spend many, many hours trying to figure things out, which your customers don't want to pay for.

Before I had my own business, I spent 15 years working in IT for banks, and it was very common for me to have a line of 3-6 people lined up outside my cubicle waiting to ask me questions - and sometimes department heads were waiting behind Help Desk techs for their turn. I worked for 3 different companies for the vast majority of my IT career, and all three companies invented positions for me, because I quickly outgrew the positions I was hired for and more-or-less became the "problem-solver." When a technical problem happened or a more general question came up, the VP in charge of technology, who was 4 levels above me in the Org chart, would call me or come directly to my desk, because I either had the answer already or could usually figure the answer out on the spot.

I'm also the person my friends come to for relationship advice - and I'm a guy who actively AVOIDS getting involved in people's relationships. But 3 of my friends are married to people I introduced them to, and I've saved a few other relationships among friends and acquaintances by identifying the root cause of the problem and making them address it directly.

Having this kind of brain comes at a price, though. I was a musician for a long time, but I was never a GREAT musician, because I lack most of that "creative" skill that artists and musicians have in abundance. It was disappointing that I really wanted to be a great musician but never had that effortless musical skill that so many of my friends had, who could create these great parts and great solos.

You can't have it all, so you have to learn to appreciate the gifts you DO have, and appreciate others who have the gifts that you don't.

I’m absolutely masterful at solving solvable problems. I usually work alone. When i don’t, others usually come to me rather than the other way around. It took a long time and some hard lessons for me to learn to ask for help myself. I still very rarely do though. I am, after all, a man.

As a career engineer, solving problems is perhaps what I do best. I have learned, though, that when a woman talks to me, she's not usually interested in having me solve her problem, all she really wants is for me to listen and commiserate with her.

So, the key is knowing when to try to solve problem, and when to let it go.

Most of my jobs have been improvising fixes to one clusterfuck after another. And kinda got thrown off the deep end at 18 as far as personal stuff so had no choice but to figure things out
