I saw a man going for a walk, what does it mean?

This morning, about 5 am as the sun was coming up I was driving along a country road when I spotted a man walking along the grass verge. The grass was about knee high and it looked like he wasn't finding it easy going as he waded through.

It isn't the type of road you see hikers on and to get where he was he must have been walking at night as it was bang in the middle of nowhere. He had no backpack and his attire didn't suggest he was a hiker. It was 8°C this morning and damp, he wasn't dressed for the occasion.

At the risk of sounding racist he was black and that's pretty rare around here. Yes it's a bank holiday so blacks occasionally come here but always on a family holiday and only to the touristy areas. I doubt he was an illegal immigrant as it's not a common entry route and he could have easily caught public transport.

We've not had an alien abduction for decades so I think we can rule that out. So why do you think someone would be middle of nowhere for no reason at that time.

(no I wasn't going to stop and ask why he didn't just walk on the road).
