Why would a cat lie on your feet?

So I am a dog person and although I don't hate cats, I am not too fond of them either.

My girlfriend has a cat that has warmed up to me and although he is still twitchy and jumpy at times, he lets me pet him and just recently he started curling by my feet or rests his head on them.

Can anybody familiar with cats tell me what's up?

I am feeding a total of 12 cats. from 3 generations. 3 are strays. Two are visitors that left offspring an one showed up unannounced. They liked the set up. None live in my house, but my yard and garden are perfect for them. I have a heated tropical greenhouse they use use the winter. I have become intimately familiar with cat behavior, like studying lions in the wild. One will lie on my feet because it does not want me to leave but does not want to get up i my lap. Or it wants to be fed. They, reacting differently to smells than we do actually like and are comforted by the smell of your shoes and feet.

He probably likes you, could just be his equivalent of default settings cuddles. Each individual is different like ourselves. Does he like or tolerate being held?

I haven't tried picking him up or holding him. He lets my girlfriend do that, he just let's me pet him.

This seems like one of those rare cases where a woman’s kids actually don’t mind or even like the step dad. If you ever pick him or any other cat up, don’t grab the base of their front legs like they’re a tripod. You’ll probably injure the precious specimen and a body will be dropped.

If he ever comes to you and lays down or something then it’s probably safe to hold him. Unless he doesn't like held in general. Nala doesn’t but she still hangs out with me.

It means he likes and trusts you.

that's his way of showing affection and trust... and the way he would bond with you, my male cat does exactly the same lol, of all the many ways in which they could come to you, some cats do that

and he'll expect reciprocation too (being petted, not for you to lie at his feet)

he likes you or maybe he is lulling you into a false sense of security and will slit your throat while you sleep.
