Big night for me the other night. My beer league hockey team won the championship for our summer league!š
This was really big for me because it was just a few years ago when I moved home to take care of my dad after my mom died, and we live right down the way from an ice rink. I wanted to play as a kid, but it was too expensive, plus my parents didnāt want to make the time commitment (understandable). I stopped in on a whim to see if they had adult lessons or any avenue for me to play at this point in my life. Sure enough, they had a brochure for just that, the lessons were just at another rink. I got started but was stopped short just a month or so into it because of the pandemic. I started fresh in May ā21, and by January ā22 I started in an adult league.
I was an absolute disaster the first season. Other than winning a fight, just about everything went wrong. Iāve stuck with it, though, and slowly but surely, Iām getting better. But Iāve been on terrible teams almost every season, lmao.
This year, long story short, we were one of the top 2 teams, and by now, Iām contributing and Iām basically a starter. Iām probably better defensively than offensively, but I try to play good 2-way hockey. Anyway, we played the #1 team (they have a ringer we call āGretzkyā), and we shut them down, won 2-1, as underdogs. I didnāt score but I feel I played really well. And afterwards, my goalie said āYou deserve this, bro. Youāre really becoming a good hockey player.ā Coming from him, the guy on the losing end of my fight that first season, lmao, that meant a lot. I have a ways to go to get where I want to be as a player, but this was a big team accomplishment thatās checked off the bucket list. Felt great to hoist the āStanley Kegā for hopefully the first of many timesš
So how about you? Doesnāt have to be sports. Academics, art, music, fitness, just life in general?
