I can try to diagnose your "thing" but I think that's just it. You want to do what you want to right now because you don't trust the future. So your ethics are fucked up because most of ethics is about believing in a future, and you don't.

Life's not very short even if you wish it to be. It won't be but you'll fuck it up so much thinking it'll end at 30 or some other number. Then you'll be 30 or some other number and you'll be kicking yourself realizing how much less miserable you would be then if you just invested in the future before: with your life first and foremost, but also with people, you relationships, everything.

You have a long future and nothing you do or say is going to change that. Life is long. Long AF. Torturously long, even. It's longer than it probably should be. It's gonna be even longer for you than me with all this technology emerging.

You're probably thinking about more than tomorrow but you're still not thinking about it like forever. And you might wonder why think of it forever? That's obviously wrong. We'll die at some point. But this:


You start to really realize this and you'll realize at some point that living an ugly life which protects you is still worse than living a beautiful life which protects other people. I say to you harshly because if you realize this (and I'm still a fellow student), treating people around you better won't require some epiphany of empathy. You'll just realize that, even without any supernatural beliefs, you do, in some way, "live forever". That life is short but its effects last indefinitely; that you might be more responsible for rest of eternity than you want to admit.

Because life is "long" or "short" -- however you want to define these terms -- but the meaning it potentially holds is definitely not short, and you're squandering its meaning either way by your actions -- as we all do time from time, but you'll be doomed to do always if you don't start to think differently.

I'm not going to try to attempt to diagnose some personality disorder. Your disorder in my opinion is an absence of a deeper sense of meaning in your life. It'll cure whatever disorder you have if you find it.

You know, we all got our own bullshit. I got my own. We run along this hamster wheel chasing for something we can't get. The higher highs, the better SO, the biggest party, to defeat your enemies, whatever floats your boat.

Running along a hamster wheel telling ourselves life is too short for bullshit. Except your whole life is bullshit. Get off the wheel. Start making something meaningful, lasting, and that's not bullshit. It's not bullshit even if you die tomorrow. Because you at least got off the damned wheel.

You start believing in other people, start trusting in them, and it's not going to pay off all the time. It might even fail most of the time. But it's never bullshit. Bullshit is what we tell ourselves when we don't believe in something and never want to invest in anything again. And if you don't invest in anything, you don't build anything, and then all you'll have is a pile of shit.
