Do cats miss you when you're gone?

We assume cats are OK when left by themselves. No drama, jumping up and down or barking like we see with other four-footed friends, thinking the world has ended. (And yes, a barking cat would be a novelty).

I think cats will just relax, sleep and do whatever they like. In the end, they have the house to themselves. They will rest in the most comfortable place they can find.

From previous experience with cats, I think they're much more independent, but I also believe they have an inner schedule based on our interaction with them. They get used to longer absences during the day. My cat was always right next to the door when he heard the key going into the lock. He would stare and then put his claws in my jeans and work his way up for me to hold him.

What do you think goes on inside their heads?
