Accidental hand touch, is it really "accidental"?

I just want to know what other people think about this. I bet it's happened to everyone once in their life - like giving someone papers during class and having your fingers touch or whatever. (surprise, that's what happened to me!)

My question is really how can you tell the difference between an intentional hand touch and an accidental hand touch? Does it have to do with the way the person touching you reacts? Or is it something they say or... Is this question just silly?

I'll try.

Accidental touch -

1. The contact was made when the action involved required close proximity.

2. The rate of contact made by that action has statistical significance over time.

3. The other party or individual made no indication they desired contact.

Intentional touch -

1. The contact was made on an action that did not require close proximity.

2. The rate of contact made by that action is statistically insignificant.

3. The other party or individual indicates a signal of intent, whether subtle or obvious.

There is some overlap to look out for. For example, in a crowded public space with close proximity, someone might grab another person inappropriately. Or someone makes a simple handshake not so simple. These are exceptions but for the most part, look for all 3 criteria.

I always say if there's a linger of 5 seconds or so, it's intentional. Sounds like whomever touched your hand is already on your mind - maybe you should get to know them a little better?
