Valentine Special Part 2 (Importance of Communication in Relationships)

As the build up to Valentine continues, I bring to you tips on how to improve your relationship. The topic is importance of communication in relationships. You would strongly agree with me, that for one to succeed in any endeavors, he/she must have the right skills. The same principle is applicable in relationships. Communication skills are very important in relationships. Communication gives the relationship a direction. Couples share their feelings, emotions, fears, resentment, likes and dislikes through communication. Communication allows your partner to adjust in line with your feelings. What is expected from a partner during communication process is attention, by attention I mean listening, understanding and contributing to the issue positively. Actions like yelling and shouting does not help solve issues, but instead you can drive your point in a calm and steady manner. People absorb words better when they are calm and the timing in communication is very important. One should know the right time to bring up issues.

Choice of words in communication is also important, this could make a whole difference between being understood or misunderstood. For example consider the two statements from a partner who needs help. The first statement “are you blind to see I need help” and the second “Please I need your help”. In the first statement the partner expects that the partner should be sensible enough without request to know that he/she needs help, while in the second statement the partner politely request for help. The second is most preferably and shows respect. It is important to note that the type of words we use daily can either brake or build our relationships.

Communication gives you an idea to the type of person, you are dating. So remember as you strive to build a stronger and better relationship, do not forget to develop your communication skills. When it hurts say it, when you happy say it, but as you communicate remember to carry your partner along.
