STOP Looking For Your Anomaly

Anomalisa is a very interesting film for the GaG community because it deals with the painful emptiness not of casual affairs, but of relationships. These too can be just as empty when either the man or woman realizes a very painful thing soon after committing to someone be it through sex or through an oral agreement to be together: that they don't feel anything anymore. What the film does so brilliantly (though never offering any solution to this) is to provide a reason for how one could be so infatuated only to be so turned off after getting what they want. The reason given is that everyone becomes just like everyone else

The idea behind the name is that this girl is an "anomaly" though, as evidenced in the beginning of the movie, there have been other women who the protagonist thought were anomalies only to discover that given time they sounded exactly the same. The question then is why are some people afflicted with this and not others?

The answer, the writer offers, is that this is the fate of the narcissistic person. He takes up too much of his mind and love with his own image and own self--possibly as a result of a fractured image of self esteem where he feels like, on some level, everyone should or already does love him. A key aspect is that he or she easily believes that other people secretly or not so secretly revolve around him in some sick way (if he ever examined his belief system objectively. It gets so sick that even his own child sounds the exact same as everyone else. The voice the movie uses to voice everyone besides the protagonist isn't annoying on it's own but after hearing everyone talk with it, it gets really, really annoying.

The take away here is to question the value of love itself. It isn't about finding someone "different" because even this is temporary. It isn't a quest for The One because this is also temporary. Find yourself first and don't expect for some anomaly to come save you and change your life.
