Definitely "friends with benefits". I don't see the point behind that. Two friends act like they're both in a relationship together behind closed doors, most likely occasionally have sex, yet the two are rather inseparable friends? Anyone in a "friends with benefits" might as well be in a relationship together to begin with.
A long distance relationship (LDR), I don't find pointless however. I find that it can easily be made into a joke, yet it can bring some of the best outcomes in a relationship possible. An LDR calls for two who are trust worthy of each other. If the two people make the effort, poor the love and patience that the relationship needs, then it can most certainly work out.
I have two incredible friends that had an LDR for over 4 years. They only ever talked over webcam and the occasional text message. For, 4 YEARS! That's longer than most marriages now-a-days. Hilariously, they've been married for 10 years, now with three kids (expecting the 4th mid 15'), and they both are inseparable.
A long distance relationship can most certainly work out. Don't knock it till ya' try it, or know someone personally who have has successful outcomes from one. A friends with benefits relationship however, is an absolute joke for me.

For me friends with benefits. If you can see each other in person but don't want to be together but be able to have sex and do boyfriend/girlfriend things is kind of weird. At least in the long distance relationship they're together and actually love each other for why they're still together even though they're apart from each other. Long distances relationship can work it just takes two people to make it work. It takes a lot of communication and reminders that you're in love with them and distance shouldn't bother you if you truly love someone. There's always a possibility in being together in a long distance relationship with mutual feelings whereas a friends with benefits relationship they don't have to love each other or even care about each other. They're just using the other person for when they're in the mood for sex but they don't want them to be their boyfriend/girlfriend so I don't really see the point in that and find it odd.
Friends with benefits have always been positive experiences for me that led to great sex and meaningful friendships.
I have never had a long distance relationship, but I think intimacy is too important for me to ever consider one long term.

Not everyone falls in love with their friends with benefits .
If you can't yoke the heart why fight it?
