I was born and raised Catholic but I never made my confirmation and I don't go to church except for funerals and weddings.
I believe in God because it gives me a sense of comfort. I like to think that there's someone looking out for me. If the idea of a divine being watching you freaks you out then by all means remain an atheist. Go with whatever provides you with a sense of comfort.
As for the Hell and damnation thing, I've never met a priest that said anything like that. All the priests I've known preach love and forgiveness and that you'll go to heaven after you die. According to those priests Dante got it wrong. ~_^
As far as I'm concerned god is being an ass talking all this sh*t about the devil, and the devils being the bigger man and not saying anything. I for one don't believe in a god, but don't have a problem with other people just as long as they stay out of my business. Life's a joke and I'm a comedian.
I'm a former Christian of a new belief system. I used to be anti-theistic (not atheist) so I'll try to explain. People become atheist from one or two reasons. Either due to enlightenment from scientific knowledge, or based on logical beliefs. Whether or not they are right is essentially meaningless. Nobody could know what comes after this life.
For me personally, it was due to the fact of scientific knowledge comma as well as realizing the micro and macro Oddities and in justices and cruelties in this world, and how that might relate to God as depicted in the Bible.
Well I'm an atheist, becuase one science. And 2 there is no proof that there is a man in the sky telling the world to go on and what not. Also I'd rather not believe rely on a book for all my answers. I like to make my own choices.
Oh and how "God" says that hell is bad and everything, well here is my opinion.
Even if there was a "Heaven" and my dead friends or family or pets went there that's great. But if there is a Heaven or Hell. In my opinion Heaven is overated. Hell personally sounds a lot funner.
I don't really believe in anything. I don't consider myself an atheist because I wish I could get myself to believe in something but I just don't. I don't think the bible is crap, but I believe it is made up. But if something made up like that can bring so many people happiness and bring them to tears of joy when they read a verse of it, its got to be worth something.
I would have thought a better update would have read:
Okie dokies! xD
1. I decided to ... (so you don't have to re-read all the work everyone put into this below)
2. Best answer = ? (as SOME kind of reward for this epic)
3. I wrote this as anonymous because I found it too much trouble for myself to create even an ambiguous profile ... but have no remorse in putting so many to so much time consuming trouble.
I grew up Christian, but as I got older, I started to not believe, and now I really don't believe in the bible, jesus, or god. I don't have a problem with Christians...except when they push their religion on me. I believe that when you are mentally and spirtually ready...then you will know which direction you want to go (in religion)
I'm curious on how the pastor answered your questions, because that's the same way I think.

I'd be happy to tell you what he told me! xD
It'll take a few posts. owo
Alright, so, for the first one.
Jesus' resurrection could have been faked.
To this he said "There is no way Jesus' resurrection could have been faked, and it's very, very, /very/ unlikely that it was a lie fabricated by the authors of the New Testament. First, it would have been literally impossible for Jesus to have faked his own death. Not only was he severely injured before he was crucified, but he was
also stabbed through his left lung and his heart by a Roman guard. And even if, by some incredible stroke of luck, he /did/ survive the crucifixion, he would not have been able to escape. For one thing, a huge rock blocked the entrance into the tomb. For another, Roman guards stood watch outside of it, presumably to deter grave robbers. And even if, once again, by some incredible stroke of luck, Jesus DID manage to escape, he would be in no condition to walk, much less inspire
others to believe that he had gloriously triumphed over the grave. Now, lets look at the idea that the resurrection was a lie. For one thing, the writers of the Gospels (which are basically biographies of Jesus' life) had no incentive to lie. They were four unlikely individuals who risked death for speaking as they did. In fact, eleven out of Jesus' twelve disciples were put to death for believing in Jesus and for being Christians.
Now tell me, what person in their right mind willingly
dies for something the KNOW is just a lie? Nobody does that.
Furthermore, look at how the religion spread after Jesus' died and returned. Only five weeks after his resurrection there were ten thousand Jews following him. Christianity went from a small, insignificant thing to a religion embraced by thousands of people. Not only that, but it spread to the Romans, who considered Christians to be blaspheming, evil people." There was more, but I can't really remember. xD
When I said I'd never seen any proof of God, he simply told me that was because I wasn't looking hard enough, and that because I already had my mind made up on whether or not He existed, there was no way I'd ever see proof of him, since I was being closed minded.
He gave me examples of people who had been saved by God, and told me to ask Christians how they became Christians, and that testimony was a powerful thing, etc.
For the loving God part, he said that it wasn't God who
'sent us to Hell' but rather ourselves. When people reject God, he said, they're basically saying "Look here, God, you don't exist, I don't believe in you, and I don't want to have anything to do with you, ever." So when we die, God doesn't say "Too bad, you're coming with me anyways". He sends us somewhere else, apart from him, just like we wanted. And that for as long as we distance ourselves from God, we'll stay in that other place.
as people of this world to stop the evil in it, and that God can not simply smite all the bad people, or speak commands in their head like "Stop raping people, you monstrous creature!" because God gave us free will. He can only act through people who love and believe in Him, because those are the people who have invited him to be in their lives. He can't force his way in like a robber and take over the way we live.
The pastor also says that God created the world with a specific
order in mind, so that he doesn't have to punish sins on earth. Sins have their own punishment.
He gave me this example; if you stick your hand into a fire, you get burned.
Similarly, if you sin, you're hurting yourself.
And I had to admit that I'd seen something like that.
I mean, look at all the wealthy people in the world, who have every material thing they could ever want, but who are completely empty inside and are still unhappy with their lives. owo
are unselfish and share their wealth with others, instead of using others to get what they want, who actually seem happy with their lives.
He told me that the Bible wasn't written by superstitious, fanciful people. xD
He said they were very serious about what they wrote down, that their religion was immensely important, and that the writers of the New Testament were especially sober about the Bible.
They were risking their souls, after all, by leaving their old religion (Judaism) in order
And when I told him science proved that God didn't exist, he started giggling at me. xD
And said that science did nothing to disprove God at all, and that it only strengthened his own convictions that God existed.
Which I had to admit is true. D:
Just because we as a people now understand a loooot of things about the world and how it works, doesn't mean God doesn't exist. It just means we're more knowledgeable. o.O
I was raised Catholic and went to Catholic schools for 17 years.
Became an atheist because I decided that I didn't really believe that humanity's sins would be forgiven just because a 2000-year old talking Jewish zombie's illegitimate father said so.
I am a Christian, but I don't believe in God. I see documentaries and have read books as well on how the universe was created and how we were created as well. And what I have learnt is that God cannot exist for a few of reasons:
- First, God must have been a really nice guy and helped out people and got the nick name, like St Nicolas (aka Santa Claus) who gave kids presents on a certain day each year, which became Christmas
-Secondly, God doesn't have perents or a mother, or something, so, were did he come from and how he came into this world with people believing in him the first time he meets them
-Thirdly, Science proves that everthing came from one single cell, which tht cell multipluyed, and so on.
Just help you ot a bit, I mind wether you are gonna go Christian or Athests...but be Atheists is a good idea because can create your own way on how we came to where we are now
Oh, now I see why you find it funny. When say "this God thing," I don't see "God" as a person, but as a concept, an obsolete theory from antiquity that should have been discarded long ago, together with other ideas of that age such as ancient Greek medicine. I meant that I hoped that embracing the concept of the existence of a divinity made you happy. If it does, it's your life, and good luck.
I am niether. I have grown up being an athiest, but sometimes I question that. I have had a wonderfull life so far, and if I'm going to hell,so be it. I think that you need to listen to yourself and only yourself. which ever you think is most helpful in your life, that's the religion for you. nomatter which you choose, people will still argue with you and ou just have to kow that you could be right and you could be wrong. I have lived about 12 years of my life being told that when my father died, he went to hell, and that I will follow. I have been teased by even my teachers, and I just hope that you keep your dignity and live your life. I hope this helps!
who put the dinosaur bones in the ground? bible doesn't mention them lol and evolution makes too much sense for me to believe in god? and if god were real and created us he should be understanding if we have doubt humans are very questionable and wheres the proof? besides a 2000 year old book with stories in it that are honestly just ridiculous and unrealistic

God is real. You can't see him but he is. Just like you can't see your brain. People who say God isn't real basically are saying they have no brain because they can't see their brain.. And, Hell is a real place and Atheists will go there and people who do not believe in him will too. He died for everyone on this earth because he loves us more than we know! So we need to show our thankfulness. Jesus is coming soon, it says in the bible and we don't know when so we need to witness to people and plant that spiritual seed! Hope I helped!
A website is not a good place to ask these questions! you're going to get a lot of lies from people that want to shoot you down, or just cram something you don't believe in down your throat.
Its much easier to discuss this kinda thing with someone you know, in person (it helps that you can look that in the eye and judge their motive)
I like what you are doing or what you did. I think everyone should take the time to learn about all of the different beliefs out there (Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, atheism, etc) and choose what they feel makes the most sense for their life. I know you only looked at atheism and Christianity, but still... Who cares what anyone else thinks?
Please don't call atheism a "belief". The point of atheism is it's "not a belief". All atheists share one thing in common; atheists don't believe in the existance of any supernatural god.
Beyond that it's just the person you're talking to and their opinion. There's no "church of atheists". It's like calling bald a hair colour, or OFF a channel on the TV.
I'm fully aware of that, my friend. I know atheism is somewhat of a broad term for a group of people that don't believe in a god or gods. Typically, atheists hold their beliefs in science. I say "beliefs" because you have confidence in it, that science will steer you the proper way. You and anyone else that has read my answer got the point I was presenting, no? She indicated that she was an atheist initially, so I didn't feel the need to dissect it. Thank you, I will be more clear the next time.
When approaching Christianity never take it literally, see it as a metaphor for life. There is no clear answer to our existence. Are you going to base your beliefs off another man's word? Weather true or not, always think for your self.

=/ So I should disregard the truth if it doesn't agree with what I've already decided for myself?
Believe your own truth (your gut feeling) over another man's "truth"(from religion, science, friends, family, media). Of course you can always change your beliefs, as you learn and experience life.
I think the idea of hell pretty much lays to rest the idea of an all loving god. Add to this the idea that doing good doesn't count in your favor and you start to see a very different creature.

Hell isn't viewed as something God does to people, it's what people decide for themselves.
Good does count in your favor. The more you give, the more you get.
As an example, the pastor's brother came into some extra cash, which he was gonna use to buy something for himself and his family, and instead he gave it away to charity.
Like a week later he got a twenty-thousand dollar per year raise for the rest of his life. xD
But I don't think that's the only way to view that statement.
People who are are rich in material things tend to build idols out of whatever it is they possess or wish to possess... and I think what Jesus could have meant (though of course I don't know- I'd have to read the quote in context to make a more accurate guess) is that rich men more often than not lose sight of God because they're so wrapped up in what /they've/ done for themselves and what
Spoken like someone who doesn't want to give up their wealth.
Mark 10:21
Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
Jesus knew that the only way to be rich was by other people being poor. But modern christians love to excuse that part of the Bible and explain it away so they can keep their wealth.
Of course you do. You say you don't think god would hold a grudge against rich people. Belgie just explained that the only way someone can be rich is for others to be poor, and that god (for this reason) may very well disapprove of rich people. This conclusion of god disapproving of material wealth is actually supported by certain very specific things Jesus said, but Christians tend to forget parts of the bible when it commands things that would be inconvenient to them. Fucking hypocrites.
If you believe hell exists, then you likely believe someone created it. How is it possible for a creator of universal love and forgiveness would create a creature with desires that would inevitably lead that creature to eternal torment? How could a creator be so vain that what matters is not what the created do but what they profess?
If hell exists, forgiveness doesn't because eternal and damnation kind of pre-empt it
If you can speak without imbuing everything you say with negativity, it'd be a lot easier for me to take you seriously. I'm not looking for answers or help from haters.
Lefthand:
I don't think it has to be that way- it might be, but I don't think it is, and the pastor didn't think so either.
The way I see it, and the way it has been explained to me, no one has to spend an eternity in Hell.
people who have no interest in being good or decent for any reason, and are only out for themselves.
All there would be is humans dominating and using other humans, in ever worsening conditions, for eternity. Of course there would be horrible suffering, but it would have nothing to do with God.
Look how beautiful the unspoiled (nature) world is and beautifully it works together. Did it happen without a master creator? Matthew 7:7 reads "seek and you shall fined. Every one dies and in who do you trust.
i think faith is not about prof. if faith was about prof then it wouldn't be called faith. if you choose to be christian then that's good for u. its your personal relationship with God. don't let someone else beliefes become your own.

Well, if what people say is true, it'll be hard for you to have an experience if you're already set against the idea. D;
And since absolute proof is impossible to obtain, an experience is probably the only way you'll be able to prove to yourself that God exists.
Good luck to ya~

God must hate the pastor's brother a lot. Jesus said:
"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God."
If the pastor truly believes in the bible, surely he understands that his brother's raise is an act of satan.
Did Jesus really say that?

If hell exists, forgiveness doesn't because eternal and damnation kind of pre-empt it
Thiezz, you just sound angry and spiteful. xD
If they eventually see the error of their ways,
and open themselves up to God, then they will join Him in heaven.
But God isn't going to say "Oh, you don't love me? You don't want me? Too bad- you're spending eternity with me anyways."
He says "If that is what you wish", and you are simply sent somewhere else, entirely and completely cut off from God and his influences.
And a place like that could easily turn into Hell.
Sure, there will be good people there who simply never believed in God, but there will be a heck of a lot more
people who have no interest in being good or decent for any reason, and are only out for themselves.
All there would be is humans dominating and using other humans, in ever worsening conditions, for eternity. Of course there would be horrible suffering, but it would have nothing to do with God.
Eternal means forever. There is no second chance as far the literature indicates.
