Do Reward Program points earned through business travel count as free money in a relationship?

If one person pays for a $2,000 hotel stay with reward points earned through business travel, say staying in lower end hotels.
at the very least should put if pocket expenses be split 50/50, if not covered by the other person. Ex: $500 out of pocket when the hotel is a $2k stay that the other paid in full with points and an upgrade to a suite.

I guess it depends on how the relationship is set up. If you typically split everything 50/50 then that's the way it should be. You can tell that person that you're taking care of the hotel reservation and if they owe $1,000 if The cost is $2,000. You can also say that I'm going to cover the hotel, you cover all other expenses up to $2,000. After that we will split in 50/50

Agree. This particular situation is a bit old but $2k for the hotel in my mind is pretty much that. Not that we ever split things 50/50 it was just the idea that all of those points were free. They were not. My employer well knows I get afforded those benefits and staying in a hotel for 70 nights a year isn’t a picnic.

I just remember a friend in college thinking my gas card from my parents was free money and didn’t count to the shared expense on a road trip when all the gas was on the card.

I just don’t like feeling used. I’m not one to split checks or be cheap. I just don’t like being told my generosity is a scratch. I’d think say it cost me $500 instead of $2k in points. Just give me credit for something! LOL

This sounds so petty. We never argue over money, just a nice trip he saw me as taking for free.

Here's the question, would you use the reward points to go on a girls trip or a solo vacation? If you want a girls trip you would expect everybody to pitch in or pay for the additional expenses since you covered the cost of the room or I would anyways

I'd say if two people are putting this sort of thing into the fine print of their relationship terms they aren't really into each other. If only one of them is doing that then it can be brushed off as just a personality quirk but both suggests they prioritize adhering to some precise definition of fair over just being decent to each other.

The other person should offer to cover the expense of something else that falls into the budget range of what he/she might have spent on a hotel him/hermself. The pair might have chosen a less expensive hotel if paying out of pocket (as opposed to using points).

That's a difficult one... as long as you both contribute and find it acceptable I guess it's fine. I would let a friend or my partner benefit from points earned, no problem as long as we're having a good time together 😄

Yes it's free money and the difference should be pocketed. It also depends on the relationship and what was agreed upon when traveling

depends on the understanding and agreement. Offering to pay for some other portion is considerate.
