Does it just seem wiser to avoid long term relationships with single parents unless you are also one yourself?

I mean the drama from their ex partner plus them having limited time for relationships. do to having children and/or work deal with makes things that much harder on a relationship over time.

I personally think it's fine for anyone to be in a relationship with a single parent, but I think you should have your own separate place.
Where the hurt feelings involving exes really comes into play, is when a person moves in with a single parent and their children and starts playing parent to somebody else's kids.
As long as the single parent is coparenting and their ex is still in the kids lives I think it's wise to live separately from your girlfriend and her kids from another man.
