Why and how should our actions on Social Media affect to the people close to us like SO or girlfriend/boyfriend?

Read a question in which the girl was worried that her boyfriend was following random girls on Instagram.

Her's is one case, but there are many relationships hinging on just Social Media platforms for their continuation.

How did these platforms become important to this level? As if, we are in a relationship not because we want to, but because we want to show other people, primarily.

I very rarely use Instagram and am not on Snapchat. But am I the only one who thinks that I (you) may miss on things if I am not present in these social platforms?
