What makes you cautious of asking your partner somewhat sensitive questions?

What makes you ask here first?
What do you fear? Losing everything? Creating drama?

What makes you think you both can’t talk through it as mature adults do? Do you have such little faith in your relationship?

I’ve always been one to rip the bandaid, and the person I’m with is the same. I get caution, but it seems some would rather live in fear than speak up.

What’s up with the caution?

Dunno. Maybe want to get info before they ask and discuss with SO. And maybe some will want a range of male or female answers.

You might not get truth is a core point. Am I the best lay you have ever had? Does my ass look too big in this dress? These are going to be answered Yes and No even if the truth is No and Yes.

just being thoughtful and meaningful will make it better or "easier" and then just go step by step with it

A couple things here.
1) you may not trust your partner to get you their true intentions.

2) you might be afraid of the answer they give you and may make you very disappointed.

In your opinion is it better to stay with someone you can’t feel comfortable being open with or trust your gut giving you these warnings, cut them loose, and try and find that person? I suppose it makes me most curious why so many people settle in with people they can’t talk to on the most basic levels.

No you asked why people do it I’m giving you theories. I ask here first sometimes so as not to get judgment from people I know IRL then I go to my partner. It’s nice to avoid judgmental people

There has to be a happy medium in a relationship with communication. Instead you have people who are very insecure and instead of asking them a basic question head on while it is fresh on their mind they will hold it in which will make a situation that can be innocently explained into full blown out of proportion drama
