I dated a much older man so kept it between us.
u I have never had a secret relationship but when I was younger, I had relationships with a few women who were not the type you take home to meet Mother. However, I lived four hours away from her so the occasion never arose where I needed to keep it secret.
Now, I take my girlfriend with me every time I visit my mother and stepfather.
I have had a few. Last one was with a co worker and she wanted to keep it quiet so we didn't get in trouble with HR.

I know that in the US they can be extremely strict about those things.
I guess if you're just getting to know someone but after a while, say 6 months or longer in and they still want to keep you a secret, then I would start side eyeing them and their intentions. Either they're cheating, too embarrassed to claim you in front of others, or they aren't serious about you.

Not an actual romantic relationship. But something like friends with benefits or any short-term non-romantic relationship, I would keep private mainly because if I'm not romantically committed to a guy I don't want our names to be attached in other people's minds. It's just unnecessary. It's better to keep relationships like that private for both of our peace in my opinion.

When you don't want it to be known for social or political reasons for example (a politician here was dating his political opponent for example)

I can give you an example of that, when I dated a 46 year old guy and I didn't want to deal with people judging me for older men. I kept it secret but yet it is not cheating... I just say it is none of their business.

I was 24, just about to turn 25 and she was 18, just about to turn 19, 2 weeks before my b-day.
We were looking for another guitarist as we usually had a two-guitar approach in our band and I found this guy, Bill through a newspaper ad and got to be good friends with him. He was REALLY good on guitar!! Better than Carlos Santana and he looked just like him!! But, the guy we already had was too egotistical and wouldn't even let Bill plug in, let alone play a single note!! But, we stayed friends and he eventually invited me to come up to his place to meet his wife and daughter. We made plans to go see a 3 Stooges film festival after we had dinner at his place.
Remember on, "The Monkees", how, every time Davy Jones saw a pretty girl, they'd both get sparkles in their eyes? I SWEAR I saw that in her eyes when I first saw Sally!! And we were still about half a block away!!
BUT, she's married to this guy so, forbidden fruit!
We went in, had dinner and then left for the theatre. Once there, I figured he wanted to sit between us so, I let her get in the row first and then him. She, almost immediately said she didn't want to sit there because it made her feel like an outsider so, he switched seats with her and that put her between us!! The movies got started and, not long into it, I noticed that her right leg was rubbing up against my left! She's married so, I paid no attention to it other than it being a cheap thrill that a pretty girl was touching and rubbing up against my leg.
A few weeks later, she told him that she'd like to see my band play which pretty much meant that he'd have to stay and watch their 2 year old daughter. So, he worked it out with me that she'd come to the show. I told him that, as it was a private party at a college frat house, I might not be able to get her in! He said, that, I should just say that she's my girlfriend and that if anybody questioned it, I had his permission to kiss her.
@Gagname The plans were, we'd go to the party and she'd get to see/hear the band and then she'd come over to my place, spend the night in one of the spare bedrooms on the 2nd floor and I'd go to bed in my room on the 3rd, then, after breakfast, we'd both go back up to their place.
We got to the party but nobody said a WORD about the extra person being there so, I didn't HAVE to lie or even kiss her! I wasn't planning on it, anyway! First break, we both went out on the porch and talked until it was time to start the second set. She mentioned something about hurting her arm when she came up out of the basement, they had stucco walls. I jokingly asked, "want me to kiss it and make it better?" She pouted, "yes". So, I did.
After the second set, we went back to the porch and sat in the exact same spots and talked again. She mentioned having hurt her finger on the raining up from the basement. Again, I joked, "want me to kiss it and make it better?" Again, she pouted, "Yes". So, I did. After a few seconds of saying nothing.. She said, "I think I hurt my lips. I said, "want me to kiss them and make them better?" She purred, "Yes." So, I did!! Very shortly after that, we started making out! I asked her, "What's Bill gonna say?" She said, "I'm gonna divorce him, anyway! He beats me!!" For the rest of the night, we were inseparable!! We got into it VERY hot & heavy. My hands explored everything and she never refused!! She was my first EVERYTHING!! Hug, kiss, hand-hold, French kiss, you name it!!
After the gig, we got back to my house and I deposited her into the spare room she was supposed to sleep in and started up the stairs for my room. She rushed out after me and said she wanted to come up with me! Okay, I let her come up! Once there, she stripped naked and got into my bed!! I did likewise and we continued making out!!

@Gagname Sally, Carol and Anu were all married when we started seeing each other. Apparently, I'm only attractive to married broads!
It was Bill's idea that Sally stay at my place and, none of us drove so, I couldn't ask the band to drive her all the way up to her place about 20 miles from where we played. and then take me home to my place about 10 miles in the opposite direction from where we played.
Bill, eventually, found out, beat her up a bit but they stayed together (AND friends with me!) for another 5 or 6 years years. Then, I lost track of them fr a few years until their daughter was 11 when I met Sally again and, although I'm not sure if they ever got divorced but, he, eventually, went to work in a prison library in Boston and, last I heard, he lives in Florida.. Sally got married again to their best friend, Scott. No idea if she's still with him but, last I heard, about 22 years ago, she wasn't thrilled with him! And, after that meeting with her 22 years ago, she was French kissing ME again!! Their daughter eventually got married and lives in New York.

I was at a pizza shop eating with Anu and shortly after she left to go to her place, Sally walks in and sits with me!! She said she was across the street at Jenny Craig when she saw me go into the pizza shop and when she was done over there, she came over to see me. We sat there and caught up for over an hour and then, I walked her out to her car and, just before she got in to leave, we hugged, kissed and she started playing tonsil hockey with me again!! After a moment of that, she pushed herself away from me and said that we shouldn't start that up, again! We said goodbye, she got in her car and drove off and I haven't seen or heard from her since, except the one time years ago that I saw her picture on FB. It was NOT a pretty sight!! Either she went bad over the following 10 years or someone beat the hell out of her! I seriously doubt Scott would've done that! He was too nice of a guy for that.
