Why are wives more likely to get left by their husbands when diagnosed with a terminal or life altering illness than the other way around?

That's honestly sad. I've heard about this a couple times on reddit. Specifically it's nurses who mention that they see wives stay with the husband till the end whole they rarely see husband do the same, in fact they more often see women alone in those situations.

I can't fathom how someone could do that to someone they love. Personally I'd stay there till the end. And honestly I'd never move on if my partner died.

I'm not saying men should, I'm saying that's why they're more likely. Emotional and mental connections are often given more importance and felt more strongly by women than men. If you aren't able to physically engage in loving actions, a man finds it harder to be with you, when other women can.

@asker thanks for providing links, topics like this, at least to me, should initially provide sources because of how touchy they are. Personally I’ve had severely ill relatives who were women and have also witnessed the death of a friend, and none of their husbands left. While your links were helpful, I chose to look for something more up to date that ‘09, and what I found seemed more fair. Couples, in general, will split when someone is severely ill. And this to me mirrors the trend I see so often with divorce rates.
