Parents not approving of partner?

My boyfriend is really kind and loving to me, he not only treats me with this love and respect but also towards my family. My parents do not approve him because he isn't a church boy like they want for me. They made him feel really bad a few days a back when he came to talk to them about our relationship. My parents don't like to see me happy and they want to control my life forever, but I won't let them. He is now at a point where he wants some time alone and he wants me to fix the relationship between myself and my family. He said he loves me and cares for me, he still tells me anything i want he will give me even if it's sex. I love him with my everything and I really want to be with him alone, he wants the same with me but my parents messed it up for me. With all this going on I tend to overthink a lot... Would he want me back eventually though he said 'maybe' we have a future? Can a relationship work without parents approval? Was he wrong for wanting space and just being friends while i fix things with my family? How should I cope?

If parents and Family do not approve then the Relationship itself will likely crumble under the stressors felt by the individual members that make up couple.

You are an adult. Tell your parents that. Tell them you won't tolerate interference in your life. Relationships last if you work at them.
