Does reconciliation take less time if the cheater confesses vs they get caught?

My parents cheated on each other decades ago; either I wasn't even born or I was just a toddler. While one of them got caught red-handed big time and the other actually confessed.

Let's say the person decides to forgive and work things out and both are on the same page of rebuilding the relationship and trust. After all if someone wanted to work things out and reconcile, that can be achieved regardless of how the cheating was discovered.. even if it was the worst case of scenario of catching them in the act.

But seriously, would the process of R after a confession take less time then if the cheater got caught?

The first cheater was the one caught and the 2nd cheater (done in revenge years later) was the one that confessed.
