I don't think there is any more "pitting" of men against women than there's ever been. Perhaps you've noticed it more because of the job you have or your studies or life situation.

Ever since women began working outside the home they've been "pitted" against men who had the sole reign and power of earning money, status or both through work and exploration outside of having and raising babies.

So any woman who invaded "male space," or threatened male authority was considered "against" men. This goes back thousands of years to, perhaps in our imaginations, the woman who was strong and skilled enough to use a spear and take down a woolly mammoth, or track as well as the men in her tribe, or who WANTED to do those things...

Today, it is more likely to be women who are in STEM or construction or architecture or work with heavy equipment, on oil rigs, are commercial pilots. These women are few because, more than likely, their dads never encouraged them to choose difficult careers and their moms didn't work outside the home. And the men on those career paths don't consider women their equals and aren't particularly supportive of women colleagues.

Outside of work, this inequity exists also. It manifests itself differently. Men and women argue over who should pay for a date when the woman is gainfully employed. Or they don't argue and fall back on traditions of man pays for everything because women don't make enough.

And it is annoying that women and men in the same jobs aren't paid the same. A "man" supports a family. A woman doesn't. Ridiculous.

This has to do with slow sociological change. It's happening. About as fast as an ice age. But the change from my girlhood to now has been amazing. Let's hope it keeps going apace.

Clash of historical precedent with modern trends: I mean we're more or less seeing the process of gender roles being redefined/removed, which, of course, creates a major clash between "sides" as society navigates the balance of biological reality (ex. ability to be pregnant, average physical abilities like strength or flexibility, etc) with modern values such as gender equality. It seems dramatic because it is. When I'm feeling positive I look at it as society's growing pains.
Speed of information flow: Why does anything get so strong pitted against anything else nowadays? Because we have so much information. You can build something at least resembling a decent argument because all you need to do is find a few good examples/pieces of support and allow your reader to be flooded by so much information that it will be almost impossible to determine if your examples are truly representative of a broader reality. Find the readers to accept your argument in the first place and you have a following, let it snowball and you have an all-out sociopolitical conflict. Always use your access to information responsibly and with an open mind.
We don't. We've created discussion spaces for conflict, but if you consider how most men and women interaction day-to-day, the conflict you see on the internet or in the news really isn't represented. What we're seeing are the loudest voices in a crowd of millions who just happen to have more of a platform than they used to.

Best we can do is be aware of it, recognize the change in society, and constantly remind ourselves and each other that it serves no one to continue.

I think it largely started when women entered the workforce. As a kid, I remember adults talking about how woman wanted workplace norms to change because most of the environments were very "manly" lots of lewd comments, jokes, playful hazing.

I vaguely remember people having all sorts of reasons why woman in the workplace would cause a problem which was probably more about people losing their jobs for things that were acceptable before they joined the corperate workforce.

I've always said that the last 70 years have been the biggest societal change humanity has ever faced. We still haven't found the "equilibrium" so to speak which was enjoyed over 100 years ago or even back in the 50's.

In short, I think it mostly stems from woman joining the workforce and played out from there. I also remember in elementary school they used to do the boys half of the class vs the girls which of course got us excited about things we wouldn't have normally been enthusiastic about. I assume this was done to give young girls more confidence in a changing world.

News programs back then like ABC Primetime, 20/20, and Dateline were actually having complete 'battle of the sexes' hour programs, and you had movies like What Women Want and that other movie where a woman was inside a man's body (can't remember the name) so she could see 'how men really are.'

This is a problem that was hatched by feminism over the last 20 years, because now we have men's rights groups who are firing back in kind.

How has feminism responded? By labling their male counterparts as "the problem" and calling them "nothing but misogynists". Feminists biggest foe now is the male movements they themselves created though their own misandry. It's nothing but a vicious cycle that just gets worse and worse every day.

How do we stop it? By acknowledging the underlying cause and completey disavow both sides, and that means feminism. But women will never allow that to happen.
