I work for a commercial cleaning company. I recently started working with a pretty severely autistic man. He can walk, and everything. He looks like a regular guy. He's just really slow in his speech, and a little slow physically. He's a really sweet guy. I've been letting him vacuum for the past couple weeks, because he wanted to.
I stopped by the company this morning to get a new key, because mine stopped working, and they lady who was helping me asked one of the managers how I'm doing. He said that we could vacuum the offices better. That's my bad, because I've been letting my co worker vacuum, and I didn't check his work. So tonight we stayed a half hour late, because he kept missing crumbs, and stuff under the desks in the offices after I told him to make sure he vacuums under the desks, and if it's where he can't get to it, then pick it up with his hands, and putting it in the garbage.
So i checked the office of the guy who told me we need to vacuum better, and there was a lot of crap he missed. I really didn't want us to get in trouble, so i pointed it out to him. He got down on his hands, and knees inder the desk, and started picking it up. After a little bit I felt bad, so I told him to go ahead and get up, and I went and got the vacuum, and sucked it up with the hose. He had a good attitude about it, but I felt bad for making him stay late. I just wanted to make sure everything was up to par. When i got home, I told my mom about this, and my mom was like "aaaww he sounds so sweet. You should have just finished up on your own, and not say anything". The problem with that is he's going to eventually have to cover for me when I'm gone, and he's gotta do it right or we could lose the contract. What do you think? AITA?

Well I don’t think you’re a jerk, because you felt bad about it. And your job has to be done correctly so that’s valid. Maybe just gently tell the guy (and show him) how everything needs to be done, and explain how it needs to be clean, so there isn’t a risk of you guys losing the contract. To soften the blow a little bit, tell him he’ll definitely get better at it as he keeps practicing and that not to worry because everyone misses stuff when they first begin.
(Even if that’s not true)
Honestly, you need to do what you need to do to get the job done right. Loss of a contract means fewer bills get paid. you'll. probably have to work closer with him and go over things repeatedly until he gets it. Sure, there may be some late nights; but it beats the alternative.
