Why do we feel shy to confess our feelings to childhood crushes until after many years?

There was a boy in my class, who was the biggest troublemaker at school. Everybody feared him.

For some reason, he had the soft spot for me and even though I was a weirdo, he demanded everyone to respect me from the very beginning.

If I was in trouble, he was the first one to come.

He always seemed to protect me like an older brother. But he always had girlfriends so I never assumed he liked me.

When we were finishing school he told me he admired me and always talked at home how amazing I was. And that he thought of me as somewhat of a girl who others had to look up to.

I appreciated it a lot, hugged him and told him that I also always respected and appreciated him and that It meant a lot for me that I knew he was always there for me.

Years later, after I got put of a relationship, he started messaging me every now and then and telling me that he is very impressed by things I do and that I have always meant a lot for him ever since we were children and that he is looking forward to me going back to Georgia and for him I am another level of a woman, someone he has always loved innocently.

It’a the 2nd time he has told me the same this year.

I suspect he probably had a crush on me since childhood. Why did he never tell me though?

Feels very sweet to hear that. Sometimes we forget who we are and he kind of, reminded who I am.
