Why would a guy not respond if he initiated an emotional talk on my birthday?

We have the same month for our birthdays. On my birthday, he sent me a very lengthy message telling me he cares, told me how much i mean to him. Also told me he wished he was there on my birthday singing me a song lol.

Come his birthday. I decided to also create a lengthy message to tell him how i value him a lot and wish him the longest life and happiness. I also said to take care but he never replied to it. I was bummed.

When i visited him, i can feel his love for me. But he did not reply at all to my birthday greeting. It's been days and he is alive and kicking because he reacted to one of my comments on the group chat.

Prior, he was also wished birthday greetings by our mutual friends and he replied to them even if they are one liners.

I mean he could just thank me you know. Why do you think he didn't reply? By the way the guy is a huge softie so i dont think he is acting to disregard me. I was even taken aback by his greeting coz i didn't think that his care would surpass.

From what you said here I get the feeling that he was reaching out to express feelings to you that go beyond friendship but your comments here sounded like you ignored his feelings to you. To me it sounded like you were saying “sorry we are just friends”. Neither letter was posted here but from the few words you said that's the feeling I got. Hope this helps!

Are you sure? When someone wishes my a long life and happiness it sounds a little like they won't be there in the future. Sometimes guys will read into things stuff that's not there.
It seems to me that he was expressing love (even if it was very passive) and maybe he felt he got nothing in return.
Of course there is another possibility, he never got it.

He took his shot and you shot him down. If you like him you need to fix it and quickly. He is a big softie by your admission so he doesn't want to risk ruining your friendship by pushing harder for a relationship. As such the best option is to minimize emotional investment

you can miss a friend. rejecting and REJECTING are different. you could very well reject a guy simply by not showing as much interest in him as he showed in you. the thing is he effectively put himself out there and likely your response was one that showed appreciation for the message but not interest in what he said or him as a person. whether you realized it at the time or not you are now in the spot where the ball is in your court as they say. he showed his interest it is now up to you to make the next move. if you like him tell him. make it obvious then the ball is in his court

Simce you say he is such a softie them it’s possible that he was taken by surprise and didn’t know how to react on it or what to think, or maybe he was bummed by the idea that you did the same thing as he did , or maybe your lengthy message was too friendly and he may have expected or wished something different!!

Maybe I misunderstood you, but if you wish somebody happiness and then say "take care", that usually means you will not be seeing them again or any time soon. It's not something somebody wants to hear when they want you around.
