What does gaslighting mean in a relationship?

I like to be very specific with how I view gaslighting in any case. Because someone simply questioning another's accuracy on something shouldn't be considered gaslighting, yet I've seen many people get that wrong.

For me, the real issue or what makes it bad is if a person is closed off to constructive discourse while also not being critical enough about what logic or other important foundations they're grounding their conclusions on.

Gaslighting is attempting to screw with someone's perception of reality to make them doubt themselves and open them up to further manipulation.

I gather the kids are ruining the word these days, but that is basically what it means.

I’ll give you a great example …

Your boyfriend says he’s going out with his mates for a few hours and he’ll be back at 11ish

it gets to 12.30 and you call him to make sure he’s ok he doesn’t answer so you leave it.

he gets in at 3am in the morning you ask him if he had a good night and you thought he was coming back earlier

he blows his top accuses you of being crazy and controlling and an argument ensues …

That’s gaslighting !!
