It could be for different reasons. Often, people just want to move on and not have to deal with the emotions of remembering the relationship while still being friends with the ex. Other times it does work out. I was friends with an ex for many years while helping her take care of her dogs, after we split up.

Friendship is a fundamental element to being in a relationship, it is the starting point and the foundation. It keeps you connected, and ultimately compatible because that’s where the laughter is, the fun, the communication, it’s all in the friendship. Once that gets lost is when the relationship goes down the drain, because you are strangers to one another. So if the friendship is lost as a couple, then how would it blossom directly after a breakup? Not to mention the circumstances of that breakup, usually the person who initiated it is the one who’s urging for friendship, but if things ended on bad terms then the ex may want no type of connection after.

In my case it is because I already have friends and don't need any more. We're not at school where it makes sense to make friends with everyone.
