Many issues rise to the surface after a couple has a child. If a man has seen his father as the "breadwinner," he might want a stay-at-home wife after their child is born.

If she's always worked, this will probably not suit her and there's a conflict right there.
There has always been a separation of at-home work after a child is born.

Many men expect that a woman, whether she works or not, is going to do the same amount of household chores AND take care of everything concerning the baby too.

You can see how THIS would rub a working OR at-home parent the wrong way. If they split chores before, they should continue to do so, shouldn't they?

The basic problem is usually how a man was raised, what interaction he witnessed between his father and mother over chore separation, and what expectations were present in his home of origin.

The only way to change this is to verbally, and perhaps in writing, agree to do something different, no matter how difficult it is to do. A woman who stays home is worth about $45,000 a year to her working husband. If she works, she's worth more, despite having to pay for child care, because she can contribute to costs and savings.

Anything can be worked out if a couple is willing. It's when a pair go into child-rearing without planning this in advance that trouble ensues. And who does what is always a changing negotiation with wise couples.
